What we're talking about is submitting your final application, right? Because you've already filled out all the sections that can be filled, am I right again?
S-man, you've got nothing to worry about. It's out of your control. Apply as soon as you can apply.
Does anyone know if IB transfer credits on my undergraduate degree count as credit? I have 6 credits for IB Europe History on my transcript. Also, do Humanities courses count as credits on any other cert other than Humanities?
EducateIt was from High school at an International School. My Undergraduate school counted it as 6 credits for History towards my degree and it shows on my transcript. I emailed HR but they never answered. Trying to see if I'm close enough for High School Social Studies.
hahaAh, that makes sense. Hard to say for sure, but the general rule of thumb is that if it is listed on an official college transcript, then DoDEA will generally accept it.
HelpOthersI would only add that Yokosuka has about 1/3 of the DoDEA population of students in mainland Japan (Pacific East). It a navy population where the community feels like a ghost town (when ships are out) or can feel very crowded (when ships are in). Most teachers live of the installation and have great views of the ocean.
If there is any advice or the possibility of some clarity to be found through another's experience and perspective, it should be sought.
This post is a bit long.
Short background: I was excessed from a teaching position this June due to COVID. Scrambling to land a position, and the need for health insurance through employment by the end of the summer, I applied to the DoDEA, interviewed, received a tentative offer, and recently the official job offer.
The process for the DoDEA is/was totally hurry-up-and-wait. I had also sent in applications to other school districts in the area, and a week prior to the DoDEA official offer, I snagged a position.
If you cringe talking finances, apologies.
Teaching in the northeast, particularly in affluent areas, amounts to mid-career salaries of over 100k. For those who make it, you can head into retirement at about 150k. I'm not boo-hoo-ing about the pay, but you can see how it is a sticking point for educators to be paid what they probably should be paid.
But(!) the cost of living here, even with a 100k salary, is exorbitant. Housing is over 30% of my gross income. My wife is in the arts and the industry is quite kaput at the moment. On one 100k salary, minus the cost of living, you might have been able to save something, but it's becoming a bit tougher to think about affording a family (like kids).
In a DoDEA overseas position with LQA and a reasonable post allowance, I guess I don't understand what or how much of the salary will need to be spent otherwise.
Granted the DoDEA salary is taxed, but could you say that a majority of the salary is easily saved given the housing and allowance benefits? Is the salary prorated for when you get to your post or is your first day at work the start of your own personal 1st and 15th cycle? What expenses outside of housing and the cost of living are not covered by the allowances afforded?
Knowing the transfer program has been cut, it's a little odd to think we could be possibly committing long term to a foreign country, school, and community that we've never had an experience with prior. A short stint in the DoDEA does not seem reasonable if we're giving up a position that affords a relatively high salary for an educator and decent health benefits. With almost 10 years toward my current retirement system, jumping ship is a bit of a hard sell too.
What's the longevity of being in the DoDEA? How did you commit to a position long-term knowing that babies might be born overseas, family is across the globe (and getting old), and dogs are horrendously expensive to get to post? How were you sold on joining the DoDEA?
tl;dr: I am trying to justify leaving my current position to join the DoDEA. Is a bird in the hand worth two in the bush?
I appreciate your time and the effort it took to get through this post. I'd love to hear some thoughts.
Again, the 7% is just one factor, since the 7% return is based on what you put into the account. Are your contributions (or at least a percentage) being matched by your employer? Do the salary/housing costs/cost of living/taxes allow you to save/invest a significant amount? Etc..
As stated, there is a lot to consider and much depends on your own unique situation (e.g. priorities, family needs, where you are in your career, life cycle, etc.).
I contacted DODEA and upload my stuff; they got back to me and said I needed university credits in: methods of teaching the four core subjects, and minimum 9 credit hours in general education-related courses "at a minimum." I'm not sure what they mean by "at a minimum," but I will have completed all of their requirements by December of this year. I also noticed the "fine print" on their website, so I took classes in methods of PE as well as an early childhood development class.
I guess my questions are pretty basic: am I competitive? And: since I signed up for a 4-6 teaching position, does that mean they will only certify me for 4-6? Or will I get certified for K-6 because of my early childhood class? Will I get certified for physical ed, too?
Thanks for reading all this. I really would appreciate some feedback. Best of luck to everyone, and stay safe and healthy.
My dilemma is my report date is coming up and I don't have a pickup date for my HHG, which I need before I can book my flight (according to the documents received from HR). The base is also telling me that the earliest pickup date won't be until the first week of October (over 2 weeks AFTER the report date on my orders).
I emailed my HR specialist on Thursday, but with it being a holiday weekend I don't expect to hear anything back until at least Tuesday and I need peace of mind before then. Do I HAVE to appoint someone to be here for my HHG pick up if I don't want to? I would prefer to be here for the pickup. Will my HR specialist just amend my orders to arrive at a later date? I feel really bad because I know my school wants me there as soon as possible with the craziness of this school year, but I feel this not my fault and I want to be here for my HHG pickup. Between a later report date and mandatory quarantine upon arrival, this really adds another month to the process.
I completed all of my paperwork throughout this process on the same day it was received. The phrase "hurry up and wait" has definitely been true throughout all of this.
Does a GS 11 position (Admin Officer) offer help with relocation expenses and/or housing? It was brought to my attention in another group that unless I was hired from a DODEA school stateside that there is no allowances for overseas moves. We are looking at Ansbach. Any advice is helpful!
Educate"Selectees initially recruited from the United States may receive certain foreign area benefits such as: Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) or government quarters, home leave, etc. (Subject to approval). Overseas allowances may be authorized in accordance with Department of State Standardized Regulation (DSSR) and DoDI 1400.25 volume 1250."
What happens if a job is not filled through eas or usajobs? Does the cycle begin again for hiring or does the school do without and try to hire again next year?
What are the probabilities that my wife (licensed school psychologist) and I (Speech-Language Pathologist) be hired by dodea to work in the same place/base? We found out about DODEA because a colleague of us worked for dodea several years ago.
We are currently working for a school district and we are interested in working for dodea. I know by reading some of the posts that getting hired is difficult as civilians, nevertheless, I want to know if any of you, teachers or slp's have any experience in relocating with your family.
The next best time to apply is tomorrow.
The next, next best time to...
