Is it easier to get a DODEA teaching job at American locations than abroad? I've only had one referral for Japan and no interview. Also- I'm confused on the pay scale- does that change? Any help is appreciated.

haha Opinions vary. I think it should be somewhat easier to get into a stateside DoDEA school since the benefits are not quite as attractive and it doesn't offer the added attraction of being able to live and work overseas.

They often do pay a much higher salary than the surrounding school districts, so you often are competing with people who are from the local area.

You are not given a housing allowance, but many locations are now allowing DoD civilians (including DoDEA) to live on post and if your children live on post, they can attend DoDEA schools on post. This is a recent change and may be one reason why it seems more difficult now to be hired in DoDEA America than it was in the past.

Haha is correct about the recent changes in student:teacher ratio and concerns about the schools closing and about pay. If you have more than 5 years of experience outside DoDEA, you would start on step 5 (steps start on 0). However, if you have more than 10 years experience outside DoDEA you would start on step 11 with DoDEA EU/PAC (steps starts on step 1).

DoDEA America has an EdS pay grade, but DoDEA EU/PAC does not. Also, there are some areas of DoDEA America where the pay scale is different, because the locations are more expensive and this cost of living is already built into the pay scale. I believe the steps for DoDEA Americas also reach a higher pay than DoDEA EU/PAC, so many people getting close to retirement move to DoDEA America to get the higher base pay including the higher step.

The pay in DoDEA Americas is an automatic % increase each year due to an agreement with the Union. DoDEA EU/PAC is determined based on the average pay of the school districts this size and is not adjusted usually until the spring when that information has been determined.

Often spouses are not able to work overseas, but have not problem finding employment in the US or are able to work from home for companies where they worked prior to you gaining employment with DoDEA Americas. It also makes it easier to make the state your state of residence for college admission, etc and I have not heard of any DFAS debt repayments with DoDEA Americas....
