I am currently working on getting my MAT in Elementary Education. (I am a career changer from Accounting.) I will be doing my student teaching in the spring, and will be done by April 2018. We are currently stationed in Hawaii. My husband will be retiring from the Air Force after this assignment, which will be April/May 2019. We've decided that if I got hired for the 2018-2019 school year it would be worth it to live in separate locations until he can retire. (Our 3 boys would move with me.) That gives me 2 school years to work towards before he retires. We were previously stationed in Korea, and our children went to Seoul American Elementary School, where I spent a lot of volunteer hours in the classroom and on the PTO board.

I feel like I have a lot of positive things - passion for the needs of military kids, life experience, familiarity with DODEA, passports ready to travel, etc. However, I know I will be competing against experienced teachers, internal transfers, and local...See More

happyteacher I hate to sound negative, but you really need to get more than just Elementary Education certification if you hope to land a referral list, let alone interview. So many gen ed positions are filled by local hires. And you will definitely need to be willing to go to Japan or Korea.

Upload your transcripts as they are at the time of the application and label them tr...See More

Teach DODEA tends to hire people with more than 2 years experience. There are teachers hired right out of school, but they are often special education teachers or others with certifications in high needs areas. You can be a CONUS hire even though your husband would still be active duty, but he cannot be on your orders and you will have to be sure only on...See More

rebekahlynn6 Thank you all for your input. This was exactly what I needed to know! I won't be done until end of April 2018, but I will take Mary-Lorraine's advice and apply that way. I realize it is a long shot my first year, but I'll have a better chance than if I don't apply at all! If I don't get hired for either of those school years, we are considering rel...See More
