Has any CONUS applicant been interviewed for a social studies position in Germany, Belgium, or the Netherlands in the last 2 years? I've been listed as qualified in EAS for the past 2 hiring cycles, I'm a veteran, and I have a very strong resume with 9 years of teaching experience.

In 2 years, I only have been referred to a school in Japan, which I don't count since it's not one of my preferences. My wife is German so we want to go to Europe to be close to family….BUT NOTHING!

Has there not been a single outside social studies hire in any of the 12 high schools in Germany, Belgium, or the Netherlands? Or have all open positions gone to local hires / military spouses?

onthemove I don't think it has been mentioned in this thread, but the openings will more likely be in Asia. Openings in the EU are first filled with transfers and many of these come from Asia- leaving the openings there. I've seen it said that getting into DoDEA is like winning the lottery. Ryan I appreciate all the feedback. I'll look into additional certifications. I just don't see myself as an English teacher, etc.....I teach social studies and always have been willing to take on new/different preps in one of the top school districts in the US, just not a different subject. It seems like people have to make pretty big sacrifices to get ...See More

Also many/most people get into DoDEA as a career, not just for a few years overseas. I know quite a few SS teachers who teach just SS but they have the ability to teach other classes if really necessary which gives a principal options...See More

anotherteacher You've only waited for 2 years which is hardly anything considering how selective you are in your choices of countries. You certainly have experience and veteran's preference going for you, but most DoDEA candidates are extremely qualified and have multiple certifications as stated above. It's worth looking into certifications that make you more ve...See More

SandArt For me, I think the sacrifices are minimal compared to the opportunity. A friend was hired for something he did not want to teach, but he eventually got the position he wanted. I was hired for the position I wanted, but I was scheduled to interview for a 1st grade position which would have killed me. Still, I would have done it in a heartbeat to ge...See More
