Sorry, should have included this question in my prior thread.

My mother resides in an Assisted Living facility in Staten Island, and she was a victim of the 9/11 attacks. She has many physical and mental health issues that are being addressed through medication, therapy and by a helpful staff.

In the event, however, she should fall critically ill or pass during my time abroad, am I allowed to return to the states to handle her affairs?

I have been waiting and waiting for her to become more sound in her health and that never seems to happen, and I feel I cannot wait any longer to take advantage of the wonderful DOD opportunities.

haha Many teachers do go back to the states for short or extended periods of time for family, medical and personal reasons. Sometimes they have a lot of accumulated leave and sometimes they take Leave Without Pay to take care of things. It's pretty common.

Theresa Doyle Thanks so much for your prompt and thoughtful response! I didn't know that leave without pay was an option, and knowing this is a relief. I didn't know if substitute teachers could be provided on such short notice to cover, what would be my class in the event that things took a turn for the worse.
