My mother resides in an Assisted Living facility in Staten Island, and she was a victim of the 9/11 attacks. She has many physical and mental health issues that are being addressed through medication, therapy and by a helpful staff.
In the event, however, she should fall critically ill or pass during my time abroad, am I allowed to return to the states to handle her affairs?
I have been waiting and waiting for her to become more sound in her health and that never seems to happen, and I feel I cannot wait any longer to take advantage of the wonderful DOD opportunities.

Many teachers do go back to the states for short or extended periods of time for family, medical and personal reasons. Sometimes they have a lot of accumulated leave and sometimes they take Leave Without Pay to take care of things. It's pretty common.
