So what is the deal with the per diem rate? I will be heading to Guam soon, and I am trying to figure this all out. I heard maybe five or 10 days before you get on the plane you start getting per diem money? Do you get that only if you stay at a hotel? Or how does that work? And how do I find out how much my per diem is for me and my family? And is it for when you get there, too? Until you're in a permanent home?
haha Some DoDEA sites are down so I'm just going by memory. As I recall, per diem is meant to cover you while traveling to your new post (e.g. transportation to and from airport, meals). In some cases you can get lodging paid if you are traveling more than 24 hours or needed to stay at a hotel before the flight for some reason.

hopeful SOMETHING TO CHECK ON...If you are not currently a federal employee (i.e. already w/DoDEA, etc.) you will NOT get per diem. Check w/your HR person to be sure...just in case.

haha Good point possibly. If not, new hires should be covered by a different Miscellaneous Expense Allowance of $1300 for PCS moves to their first posting. As I recall (now that you mention it :S), you just had to file to claim it and did not need to provide receipts.

As always, a good idea to ask HR if you have a specific contact.

HelpOthers As for the receipts. Take a photo with your phone, so you have the image ready to upload or add up when needed and you don't have to worry about losing the pieces of paper.
