Hi all. I think this will be my last post. I have wanted to teach DOD stateside for 5 years now. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to remove myself from the running this year. A few of you mentioned that retirement is not great. Can you give me a figure? I'm in Ohio and my retirement here at 65 will grant me a 45k pension for the rest of my life. Our salaries are also excellent. (DOD would actually be a slight pay cut for me.) When I was in VA, the number would have been about the same. Is it true that DOD pensions are WAY less? I'm counting on my pension to support me and my wife after retirement. I can't do a 20k or less pension. Thanks so much.
someday From what I understand Ohio teachers don't pay into social security if thats the case then you really need to look at both your SS benefits and federal pension to compare them. I ran some scenarios and if I can do 20 with federal plus SS I would be getting right around the same at about 45k.

haha If you are just looking for a high number on a single pension for your peace of mind then DoDEA is probably not the best option for you. I think if you (or anyone wrestling with the same decisions) look at the total picture then DoDEA will generally be equivalent or at least competitive when compared to many/most teachers' stateside scenarios.

IsItFriday? A 62 yr old teacher in DODDS with a Master's degree who retires today with 20 years of service would collect about $16,000 as a pension (FERS annuity.)

Social security and 401ktype accounts compicate the question. But they won't change the amount of the FERS annuity.

A bugger question is where do you plan to reitire?
