First: make sure your application is complete, all checks are green, and that your current contact information stays updated throughout your transition. Make sure that you apply for "local hire". I was highly encouraged to check all possible position types even if I was trying for Full-time employment. Try to get qualified in as many positions as possible, I sent in transcript review to add Kindergarten, originally I only qualified 1-6.

I was not given the same information about military spouse preference but I was told basically it may not influence the application much. It can be used as a "tie-breaker" if a principal has 2 equally qualified candidates. Equally qualified doesn't necessarily mean same degrees/years of experience but could be anything that makes a candidate the best fit for the job. I submitted forms for Military spouse preference figuring it couldn't hurt and it could help. There is a lot of mystery about how they rate applications and I didn't want to potentially lose any points for MSP if they are there. According to the regulations you can claim MSP up to 30 days before you arrive.

I reached out to the teaching community here and made a connection with a current teacher working at the school. I asked her what the principal values and discovered it would be a good idea to send an email introducing myself. I've also read that this can turn principals off so be careful with this. I highlighted things in my email that I saw the principal mentioning in the newsletter, specifically with regards to meeting the needs of the whole child and coming together as a community. I know principals can get a long list of candidates and wanted my name to be familiar. If you can sub in the school and make a good impression that is also desirable, but I have a job here outside the agency so that wasn't possible for me

If you have any experience with DoDEA list that experience. I'm told this can sometimes look good. I did my student teaching in Germany so I highlighted this even though that experience happened a while ago.

I 'm sure it was coincidence, but I contacted HR to ensure my application was up to date and that it was ready for a referral. 2 days after contacting HR I received a phone call for an interview. Someone told me that you should keep your application active and suggested logging on to EAS to make sure things look good and click "submit" from time to time. It says your application is active for a year but it seems like the people getting calls are the ones actively trying and not the ones that just apply and wait patiently.

As you can see there is a lot of "I'm told" and "someone suggested" I'm just crossing my fingers and trying to do anything that might help.

vickyo Mrs.C - Thank you for sharing all the information that you have gathered. It has been so difficult to find anything about local hires. I appreciate you sharing your tips and hope you find a position at the school where y'all are stationed.
