I have accepted a position in Catania, Italy off the mediterranean coast and had a few questions. I greatly appreciate any insight anyone can offer:
1) I understand there is some kind of program for teachers to move between schools, I can't imagine there would be anywhere else I would want to go but I understand that my location is highly desirable by other DODEA teachers. Could I be pushed out of my position by another teacher who might have more seniority in another district?
2) Where do teachers live, do they mostly live on base or off? Is living off base an option or required? I would prefer to live off base along the coast preferably along the beach or near it, would my LQA be sufficient to afford this?
3) How do teachers transport themselves between school and the city. I can not find any public transportation between Catania and Sigonella? Does the base operate some kind of transit shuttle? I have read that traffic is horrible in Catania...See More

Hardship is a relative term. With DoDEA it means something different than it means for most people.
Generally, if you have a US drivers license then you can take a written test in your host country (on base, in English) and get a special license that lets you drive in your host country, without having to take a driving test. I am not sure ...See More

Sigonella is a hardship location due to it being on an island at the southern tip of Italy. To fly anywhere, you have to first fly to the mainland, for connections.
