Some areas start hiring after school ends, so sometimes the hiring season goes into the beginning of the school-year. Also, numbers change and they may find out early in the year that they can hire additional people. Keep your current job until you have orders, because the background check can hold up your arrival date significantly.

Is it the norm that you get a call without ever being notified that you have made a referral list?

It is not unusual to be asked to interview without receiving a referral e-mail. When you miss a call, copy and paste it into a Google search to see if it is spam. If it is, no worries.
