Here's the progression (I received no phone calls, only emails): Referral 2 1/2 months later - Interview (by phone) A week later- tentative offer (references contacted) A week later - equip/background check email (to start that process) 2 weeks later - formal offer 3 weeks later - landed in Japan!

So were your references contacted a week after your interview? Does HR contact references or does the principal?

@H, The principal or other person doing the hiring is the one who contacts your references.

My references were not contacted at all. I interviewed on Monday and got the offer Thursday of the same week.
