We kept our tourist passport when we applied but were applying through the US consulate overseas so it was probably different. I have heard other people say they sent their tourist passport in when they applied and they returned both when the burgundy was ready. If my child does not have a travel passport yet, should we go ahead and start that application ( for the blue) or will it complicate and/or slow down the process with his burgundy passport? Or is this a non-issue?

I just did my children's passports. Just do both at the same time. You need two original birth certificates and two copies of your ID. Etc.
