I was thinking of getting Sped and ESL certified in my home state, meaning I'd take the state certification test. My question is will it make a difference in me upping my chances of getting hired? Will they be looking to see if I have Sped/ESL college classes too? I've heard the more certifications you have the better chance you'd have to get hired. Thanks/
Haleigh I'm sped certified in Texas, but when I initially requested qualification in sped, I was considered unqualified in all areas. I graduated with my Master's in Special Education/ Exceptionalities this month. I hope my degree along with my state certification will now help me meet most of the requirements to be qualified in the different sped areas. T...See More

SpedTeacher74 You often have to have more than a state certification to qualify in all areas. My initial certification only qualified me in Mild/Moderate. I had to take additional classes to qualify for other areas of SPED. I would say the more education you have, the more areas you are likely to qualify in.

haha Yes, DoDEA really only cares about college credits. State certification does reduce the required credits by half in most cases.

seoul94 Haha, do you know how many credits/classes I should take to qualify for Sped? I know once I had 4 college classes in Early Childhood I was then considered "qualified" to teach EC, which is the grade level I want to teach for DODEA. I'm just trying to see if I should take a couple of Sped class at my local community college. Thanks

haha Generally you need 30 credit hours for each of the different SPED areas. If you have state certification in SPED (some states allow you to test into it) you usually only need half of that number.
