I am 6 months into a 1-year lease that requires me to pay $2000 if I want out of the lease before the year is up. My experience has been that when active duty service members PCS, they are allowed to break their leases without penalty. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience, as a government employee, having any luck getting out of their leases without hemorrhaging money.
IsItFriday? Are you active duty? No? Then no luck.

Do check local and state laws however, to make sure that those punitive exit clauses are actually legal in your state.

HelpOthers Not all leases even have the military clause. When we signed our lease near Fort Bragg, I had that military clause altered to include DoDEA and all parties initialed, so when I did move due to DoDEA elsewhere, I was released from the lease.

WA_Counselor Thanks! I actually had the option when I moved in to either pay the $2000 to break the lease or to continue to pay my $1275 monthly rent until they found new renters. Because I was new to the area and there seemed to be quite a few vacant apartments, I opted for the $2000 pay out. It's not so terrible on its own, it's just that I am still trying to...See More
