Contractual language information

I'm on a tentative agreement right now and I'm about to start EQip. I looked on the FEA website a good bit to see if I can access the contract to read through it. I'm in a union now and I'm actually an association representative in my current position so knowing the language of a contract is something that's professionally important to me. I realize most collective bargaining units do not want their contracts floating around out there as well. Any help is appreciated, maybe I should ask HR?

Contractual questions I have are:

How many preps is a secondary teacher required to teach?

How many planning periods/lunch are we entitled to?

Class size max and minimum to run a course?

Extra duties that may be required of us?

Staff working conditions/environment?

What is the evaluation process and timeline?

haha Far from an expert but from what I have heard, know, experienced, our contract is quite old and is kept together by MOU's because negotiations for a new contract have not gone well.

1- I do not believe there is a maximum specified number. It varies wildly by subject, location etc. and generally falls under the principal's discretionary authority.

2- Everyone gets two per day or one per day if you are on block schedule.

3- Again, never heard of absolute max or min. 24 is a working max. for some locations based on class size, furniture etc. Have seen classes with as few as one for things like independent study, 2-3 for foreign languages, etc.

4- Basically none that fall during your planning on scheduled classes. In theory you could be assigned something that fell between your report time (say 7:25) and when classes start (say 8:00) such as monitoring a parking lot. In practice, this doesn't seem to haven't that often or varies quite a bit between locations. Principals do apparently have the power to assign Extra Duty Contracts. They generally do not do this unless there are not enough people who are interested/have volunteered.

5- Varies wildly between locations, principals, etc. Ask more specific questions if there is something in particular you are interested in.

6- In the past, new hires were on two year provisional status and were observed 3 times per year with final evaluation of meets/does not meet expectations at the end of each year. After that, there was a 3 year Professional Growth Plan cycle where you were not observed during the first two years and had two (?) observations during the 3rd year with the same meets/does not meet expectations evaluation at the end of each year.

They have recently attempted to unilaterally thrust a new system on us which the union is fighting. They have briefed us on the new system but the details didn't really stick. I believe there are 3 categories on the evaluation now (does not meet expectations, meets expectations, exceeds expectations).

7- Debt letters are a common complaint. Generally they are for LQA, insurance, etc. where they say you have been paid too much and they want it back. Amounts vary greatly but they are generally flexible with repayment. Union tries to help but the burden seems to be on us to prove the debt is not valid. Other than that there are move in costs, etc. which vary by location.

8- I forget the details of the insurance. There might be some catch up payments.

haha Also, generally we are required to attend a monthly faculty meeting that sometimes runs until 4:00. That's pretty much the only after school meeting we can be required to attend.
