Do we need both? My kids do not have passports. Do we need tourist as well and government passports?

You only need the official but there is no harm in getting the tourist also especially of you plan to do any traveling when settled.

My understanding is that the official passports are for traveling into the country to report to work. We traveled over the summer, and going into other countries, we used our tourist passports. Returning to Japan, we used our official passports. So if you plan to travel with your children, you will all need tourist passports. I have heard reports o...See More

I think it only took a few weeks to get the official passports for all 4 of us. I actually think they were ready sooner, but they won't send them to you until you have travel orders.

This is another example of how different the process is. We got ours for the whole family the day after we got our firm offer on a fed ex package. Like they had just been waiting to send them.
