Referral Lists

I received 2 emails today letting me know I am on referral lists for Japan and Korea. What does that really mean? I tried to search for other posts about this but couldn't figure out how - so if someone could explain that to me as well, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

HelpOthers Lindaloo, to answer the question about college students. If they are full-time students, they can be on your orders until their 23rd birthday. Lindaloo Thanks Mary! So if I am understanding correctly, if they both decide to go with us and stop college for now and IF (I realize this is a big IF) I get offered a position and I get order before my oldest turns 21 (July 28th is his birthday) they could go with us and live with us and we would getting housing to include them?

haha It does get complicated when working between being eligible to be on orders (under DodEA) and eligible for base privileges (under base/military command). When you apply for a base ID, they will generally see that the dependent is 21 or older and ask for proof that they are a full time student at an institute of higher learning.

I did not recall accurately. LQA for college students end at age 21 even if they are full-time students. Your unmarried, full-time college student children not yet 23 years of age can be enrolled in a college or university away from your current home and still be added to your orders.

If you accept a position overseas, and your children want to join you, they can have delayed PCS travel and arrive at the duty station after they have completed their quarter/semester as long as it is within the delayed travel time period (up to 6 months I think). If they are coming from a different location, you will need to talk to the HR person about how to arrange that. They may not cover anything more than the cost of flying from your start location (forever considered your home of record, HOR). They also may not pay for shipment from the college location. However, you might have some shipment that you can send through the mail.

After arrival at the location, they would need to provide proof of full-time status to receive ID card and base privileges if age 21-22. This card will usually end with the end date of your contract or possibly 2 years if your contract is longer than that. Their passports would have the SOFA stamp on the official and you should be able to have an unlimited exit/re-entry SOFA stamp added to the travel passport. This would expire the date your contract ends.

While your children (not yet 21 years of age) are away at college, IF they are on your orders, you should be able to include them in your LQA (that's my understanding). However, if anyone in the household is away more than 30 days, COLA will not be provided, so they must be notified if this occurs, even if they are away at college/university.

More than likely, even if you were offered a position for this year, I think the background check might prevent you from arriving prior to your oldest child's birthday. Therefore, that child would need to be enrolled full-time in a college or university (or trade school etc.). Most military locations have one or more colleges/universities where your child could potentially enroll. Most if not all the coursework will likely be delivered entirely online, which is not for everyone. Your child might want to consider enrolling in an online university/college now as long as the work can be completed from another time zone easily. Classes that occur on camera at odd hours may or may not be best.

If your oldest gets on your orders and arrives prior to the 21st birthday, I think that grace period won't go beyond the 22nd birthday if they are not enrolled full-time in a qualifying post-secondary school. This information was shared by the HR person, not something I read, so again, talk to HR about your specific when the time comes.
