I learned from this board that the more qualifications the better when it comes to DoDEA. I'm wondering if some areas provide more opportunity than others? For example many on this board seem to have special needs certifications. Are those necessary, along with general subjects to have a shot?

I've currently qualified to teach— Physical Education K-12- Middle School: Math, Science, Social Studies, Health— High School: Math, Health.

Are those areas too common to set me apart? I've had 4 referrals since March, only one at my desired location, and no interviews. Especially with the lack of transfer now, there are only two countries (both in Europe) that I could/ would accept a position due to my family. I know that makes this a long shot, but it's my dream, so I'm hoping for the best. Is there any area I should look to add that would be helpful along with my current certifications?

haha It's a separate cert for General Science, but there are also specific certs for Biology, Chemistry etc. The requirements for the specific certs generally call for a degree in any science field, plus 12 hours in the specific subject (Bio, Chem, etc.). So, you likely have some of those already. If you could state test into a Bio cert (or other) then ...See More

IsItFriday? Haha is correct.

Think of your certs in groups. While not a perfect list, you are basically chasing three types of positions.

1. The Sped positions

2. The PE and Health positions

3. The Math and Science positions

The most advantageous thing would be to add some some of those HS science certs. High school...See More

Liv_hopeful @haha and @IsItFriday?, may I ask what you meant by "you would only need 6 hours in each/any of the specific subject areas to qualify for DoDEA" to add another endorsement? I'm wondering if I can add more endorsements in HS biology and chemistry once I pass the state tests (I actually hold separate degrees in biology and chemistry as well). I just ...See More

haha No, we were talking about semester hours to be considered qualified by DoDEA in specific subject areas (Bio, Chem, etc. vs. General Science). Generally, you need a science related degree that includes 12 semester hour credits in that specific area to be considered qualified. We were discussing whether having a state cert cut the normally required 1...See More

Liv_hopeful @haha, Thank you for clarifying this. I wasn't aware of the the alternative way to be qualified to teach subject area(s) just by holding a regular degrees in the subject(s). I thought we had to take the state certification tests.

Thanks again!
