How can I find out if a particular base has on base housing for single teachers? I do not drive and living away from a base would certainly be a problem. I don't want to ask a housing question before I start and interview nor do I want to interview and at the end find out that there is no on base housing for single teachers.

IsItFriday? The bike suggestion is not realistic. Number one, WW hasn't come back to attest to her love of cycling. And number two, every DODDS teacher I know who cycles, also has a car.

Non-driving DODDS teachers do exist, but they are very, very few in number. My best guess is that the number of non-driving DODDS teachers is 1% or less of the total. Remember, if we're being honest, two married teachers with one car doesn't make one of them non-driving, and a teacher with no car, who is driven everywhere by her fiance doesn't really qualify as non-driving either. And neither should we count a cyclist with a mini-van parked in the driveway.

In my experience, most non-driving DODDS teachers are elderly with a health condition that affects their ability to drive. They started with DODDS as a younger person, and are now in their twilight years. Occasionally there is a younger teacher, who for reasons of travel history (was teaching in Rwanda or something) has fallen into a driver's licence black hole. They usually climb out after the next RAT.

DODDS is set up for cars. The majority of your in-processing paperwork revolves around your car. Local driver orientation/training, testing, local permit, tax free gas card, temporary car rental, shipment/pickup of vehicle, car registration, insurance, vehicle inspections, local car modifications, local car taxes.

If we're being honest, moving to a new country as a DODDS experience is really a car experience.

Once you have your car, then your boss tells you to get to work, and if you're a self-starter, you Google before you bother him/her with your petty "transitioning to a new country" problems.

And should a person luck into a job at the perfect "walking base", well, we know what happens next.

The school downsizes, and the person goes into the non-existent transfer round as a Category C, and ends up in Misawa.

HelpOthers If open to it, most bases do offer driver education classes, but you may want to consider getting a license even if you choose not to drive until you are required to drive.

TGIF It is true that DoDEA is built for drivers, whether overseas or in the US. I can think of only one military base (out of all DoDEA locations--both overseas and in the US) where it is very possible for a teacher to survive as a biker or walker and that base is located in Yokosuka, Japan.
