I'm thinking of applying for DODEA but I just want to see from those who know or have experience with DODEA if I am competitive. I'm a male, late 30's, single w/ no kids, and I'm certified K-6 in Utah. I have a master's degree in Judaic studies from King's College (London) and another master's in elementary education. My BA is in political science (University of New Hampshire). I've previously taught ESL in China for 3 years, and I also served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Indonesia for a year, where I again taught ESL. As of today, I am entering my fifth year teaching 4th and 5th grade (5th grade gifted and talented for 3 years, 4th just normal classes for 2 years).

I contacted DODEA and upload my stuff; they got back to me and said I needed university credits in: methods of teaching the four core subjects, and minimum 9 credit hours in general education-related courses "at a minimum." I'm not sure what they mean by "at a minimum," but I will have completed all of their require...See More

Slcjkl Thank you! Also, after researching, it's clear I'll likely need more certs. In your opinion/experience, what would be better for hiring purposes - a gifted cert (I teach gifted now, so it makes sense) or adding a MS social studies cert? The other sensible option would be adding pre k and k certs, but I honestly don't want to teach that age group. T...See More

Slcjkl I heard from others that the gifted positions are few and far between and always go internally, but obviously no one can be sure

HelpOthers Only add it if you want to do it. :) If you are not far from gifted cert, add it, but if not, it may not help enough to go the extra mile. The most important thing is to get you application complete even if only for a few certs. Then add more as you are able.

Slcjkl The gifted cert is 15 credits, which is 5 classes and around 2k, making it more than doable. The other certs are 24 credit hours. My plan was to start it in January. After that is done, maybe look into middle school certs. And is it true that if you have a state cert, it cuts the credit requirements in half? Does that apply across the board for all...See More

haha Adding gifted would be better than adding nothing but it is true that there are very limited positions and openings every year. SS openings would be more common and the cert potentially more useful but then again SS is a relatively common cert and there are many qualified candidates in the system. AVID pairs well with SS and can be added with a wor...See More
