You can't live on base in Okinawa so you would need a car.

Almost all locations require a car.
I'm guessing you don't have much military experience. Am I right? Because military bases are often large, sprawling affairs. Cars are essential.
A couple of teachers cycle to work, or even walk, but those teachers also have cars parked in their driveway, so their families can enjoy the weekend.....See More

Thank you all for the information. We could buy a cheap car as that seems to make sense for times when using other methods is not possible. Cars are cheap here in Okinawa. We bought 2 for $1500 each. Public transportation is terrible here, and with the COVID restrictions, we are not allowed to use it anyway. It rains way too much to cycle every day. My friends who bike to work also own cars.
