Some schools do require a waiver if you don't live in the area for your school, but no matter what, your child can attend DoDDS schools wherever you are stationed.

Your children CANNOT attend DDESS (that is what the stateside schools are called...DoDDS are the overseas schools) unless you live on base. I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I was wondering if it is possible to transfer from DDESS to DODDS or are they two separate entity and the transfer does not happen? I have friends who waited years to get into DoDDS even though they were in DDESS. However, I was hired from DDESS for a job in Japan this year and it was the first I had applied. However, I had spent 3 years overseas in Okinawa as a local hire and I knew people throughout Japan which I am sure helped me to get an interview so quickly.

Wow....some HR offices must do things very differently in this system. I received my firm offer in mid-May, and in that was paperwork to request travel orders. I got everything turned in at the end of May, and I am still waiting on those orders. Even if you live on base, you may not rate commissary/PX privileges. I know at Camp Lejeune (same district in DDESS), teachers do not rate commissary or PX. As a DDESS employee, you get a paycheck and you have access to medical, dental, life insurance, etc. just like any other teaching job. It depends. If you are hired while still in the states you would in theory get .5 of all of the usual benefits. If not, you would be considered a local hire and would likely only get .5 post allowance. As for what to put for the total number of exemptions, this depends on whether you would like to receive a tax refund, or only pay what you think you need to pay with the risk that you may need to pay extra later.
