1. If you are a stateside DoDEA teacher, are you eligible for the transfer round each year...including overseas locations?
2. If stateside DoDEA, are children of employed teachers eligible to attend the base school?
3. Those of you who have worked in stateside schools, would you agree that the benefits of working stateside DoDEA are worth taking a potential pay cut...currently have 29 years experience and will be starting on
step 5...probably wouldn't take long to make that up if I'm correct...???
afwifeSo just to clarify, a person teaching stateside cannot transfer to other locations? Sorry-I am trying to understand/ We would be stateside right now, but would love to go overseas one day.
Is it easier to get a DODEA teaching job at American locations than abroad? I've only had one referral for Japan and no interview. Also- I'm confused on the pay scale- does that change? Any help is appreciated.
You are not given a housing allowance, but many locations are now allowing DoD civilians (including DoDEA) to live on post and if your children live on post, they can attend DoDEA schools on post. This is a recent change and may be one reason why it seems more difficult now to be hired in DoDEA America than it was in the past.
Haha is correct about the recent changes in student:teacher ratio and concerns about the schools closing and about pay. If you have more than 5 years of experience outside DoDEA, you would start on step 5 (steps start on 0). However, if you have more than 10 years experience outside DoDEA you would start on step 11 with DoDEA EU/PAC (steps starts on step 1).
DoDEA America has an EdS pay grade, but DoDEA EU/PAC does not. Also, there are some areas of DoDEA America where the pay scale is different, because the locations are more expensive and this cost of living is already built into the pay scale. I believe the steps for DoDEA Americas also reach a higher pay than DoDEA EU/PAC, so many people getting close to retirement move to DoDEA America to get the higher base pay including the higher step.
The pay in DoDEA Americas is an automatic % increase each year due to an agreement with the Union. DoDEA EU/PAC is determined based on the average pay of the school districts this size and is not adjusted usually until the spring when that information has been determined.
Often spouses are not able to work overseas, but have not problem finding employment in the US or are able to work from home for companies where they worked prior to you gaining employment with DoDEA Americas. It also makes it easier to make the state your state of residence for college admission, etc and I have not heard of any DFAS debt repayments with DoDEA Americas....
I'm headed to Europe! Just got the email today : ) thanks everyone for all of the info sharing on this site, it makes this process a little less daunting!
I was going over the forms to fill out once you have been given an offer. I was surprised at the title: "Acknowledgement of Overseas Tour Length/5 Year Limitation". The form reads, "I acknowledge there will be no extensions beyond the five year limit." Can someone explain this to me? Thanks in advance. :)
hahaAs ML said, we have always been exempted from the 5 year rule (so far). Some bases are enforcing a 5 year limit to living on base but that is totally different.
(1) I put an interview meeting spot close to me. Would it be better to set the preference for "phone interview?"
(2) If I am allowed to live on base overseas, will I get some form of living compensation since I will not be receiving LQA? For example, will I receive free rent on base or will I receive compensation to pay on-base rent and utilities?
(3) For professional evaluations, I have only worked at one school but I had different administrators who completed my TESS evaluations. Is it okay to have these three people complete the required form 5011 if they work at the same school and it is for different years that I've worked here? Or is this something that is not tied to my TESS evaluations and is more like a "reference" evaluation?
The only thing I have left to finish is the Professional Evaluations and Uploading Documents. Any other advice would be helpful as well. Thanks!
They used to do a job fair like event i...See MoreVirtually all interviews are by phone. In fact I'm not really sure how an in person interview would work. Odds are that you would be interviewing with someone other than the prospective principal which can't be a good idea for you (unless somehow that principal were in the states at a city near you).
They used to do a job fair like event in Virginia where you could interview with a principal but since you were not really interviewing for actual openings with the principal that would be hiring you, I'm not sure how useful it was.
Happy TeacherTo clarify - whether you receive LQA off base or if you are allowed to live ON base at an overseas location, you're given "one free rent" as my husband calls it. You don't receive compensation above the exact cost.
SandArtHaha, if you pack out date was 8/10, when were you supposed to arrive in Japan? I am trying to figure out if I am supposed to arrive in Japan around 8/2, they should pack my stuff on ____.
Earlier is better so you are not waiting on your stuff in case you are ready to move out of temporary housing and into your permanent housing. BUT, you have to take into consideration how/where you will be living once your stuff is gone. Once you reconcile those two realities, you probably want to book your pack out as early as you can.
Once you are in, you have the option of arranging your own RAT travel and getting reimbursed. We have only flown commercial but I have heard of people put on gov't flights (I think commercial is much more common for new hires).
Just wondering if anyone knows if real estate expenses are normally authorized for new hires going OCONUS? I am going to look into it a bit more but hoping someone has insight. Has anyone received their travel orders yet?
