I had my references checked before my interview. Still no news after three weeks. I was told there was a short hiring window during my interview…so not sure on the status now. Still trying to keep hopeful!

As people have discovered, there are no hard and fast rules or roads to getting hired with DoDDS. As far as I know, my references were never checked when I was hired.

It seems strange that anyone interviewing teachers now would talk about whole language. Most DODEA schools I have been in use a balanced literacy approach, which is what TeacherMama described. I did not get that question, but my interview was for math. I did teach kinder 13 years ago and TeacherMama & Teach give excellent descriptions. If you're not K-3, you probably won't even get that question.

It is a different process for admin. We applied through USA jobs, and we all received our scores along with how many applicants were qualified. So, we at least have a better idea of how competitive we are, but it is frustrating when there are many openings and the hiring process isn't very clear.

Teacher vacancies are usually not announced anywhere other than through e-mail to people in the local DoDEA e-mail list. If you are "qualified" in EAS, make sure all the boxes have green check marks, your application is final and everything says, "2017-2018" school-year. Hard to say exactly. It might mean that the position was filled. It might be that the referral was generated in error or that they decided to change the certifications/areas required for the position and so cancelled the original referral list. Hopefully it's not the last list you make it on to.

Sometimes, they think they will need to fill a vacancy, but then numbers change, and the potential position is cancelled. On the other hand, things could change back, depending on enrollment in the fall.

And the position is based out of Yokota, not Yokosuka, Japan. My dad and brother are retired Air Force, so I am excited that it is an Air Force base, but of course, I am very happy here at Fort Knox too. :)
