Yeah they go by the title.... and if it doesn't say Moderate/Severe disabilities they won't count it. All of my courses were prior to 1999!! I had a time trying to find course descriptions! The ABA should count towards autism certificate, but apparently they don't have a straight up autism class with that.... the kids are either served LIMS, SP or ...See More

My license says p-4 special education instructional specialist and 4-12 special education instructional specialist with the codes of 230 and 231. When you go to the ADE website and type in those codes, it gives you everything I'm qualified to teach. Hmmmm that's a tricky one because it sounds like a blanket certification for all sped positions. I'm technically certified in my state to teach autism because I have LD and ED, so that means I'm qualified to have students with autism. Pretty much. They mostly want just the facts which is why number of certifications and years of experience count for so much with them. They basically are only interested in things that can be quantified and be part of a searchable database for when admin are searching for candidates for a specific position.

There are generally not any real shortcuts or magic bullets. The best thing that you usually can do is try and add certification areas so that you will be eligible for more positions and principals would feel like they have some flexibility to fill more holes in a timetable. Local community college, online colleges? The University of Phoenix and Walden University have some online courses, I think. I took an online course through Pima Community College in Arizona.
