Suggestions for gifted student

I have a third grade student who is gifted. Unfortunately we don't have a program for gifted students so I am trying to challenge him in my classroom. I already have a plan for reading and would like some feedback on my plan for math. Our math series provides supplemental resources for enrichment and problem solving. They correspond with each lesson. I was thinking of having him participated in my lesson until he feels he understands the concept (he catches on much quicker that the other students). After he feels he is ready, he will begin to work on either an enrichment or problem solving activity which is on the same concept but a higher level. He has a one-on-one aide for medical reasons so she will be able to monitor his progress. I will then supply him with a packet of logic and math activities/puzzles that require higher level thinking skills. KK Can you pre-test him before each unit? By unit, I mean every week or two's focus material? Then you could set up a contract with him for exactly what he will complete/practice, based on what he's demonstrated he knows.

This might be a better way to get going instead of letting him judge based on how he "feels" about it--it would be easier to relinquish structure and move toward that if he can manage it than it would be to have to impose it later. It would also encourage better planning for him, because you'll know exactly where his strengths and misconceptions are (assuming you have a good pre-assessment).

To avoid isolation, you could offer the same contract to any student with a 90% understanding rate on each pre-test, with the expectation that students will get support and practice in any unit areas where they needed more instruction during the week. The contract could include some menu choices that extend or deepen the mathematics principles you're studying in that unit, or they could move toward other kinds of problem-solving skills. (You can google curriculum compacting) The contract piece should replace regular work, and not create extra work. The pre-test shows parents, administrators, and other students that you're covering your bases and that students who already know x are ready to do y, while students who need to learn x are going to do x. Just be sure that y is a valuable use of their learning time in math.

This student might also possibly attend math class with an older grade level.

GT Teacher What a nice post - this child is clearly in good hands with you. And he has a full-time aide? Tell him that you don't want him to feel apart from the class even though his special abilities do make his learning needs different. Explain to him what you've explained to us.
