Wonder why I dread renewal so much? I've heard that the renewal process is supposed to be much less strenuous than the initial certification process, but how I dread beginning it. Maybe it's just because I'm older? Any encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks, Beth
I'd estimate that renewal takes about the amount of time that ONE entry took on your earlier attempt(s). It's most like Entry 4, which was difficult for many.
The first hurdle is to decide on your PGEs for Component 1. Once that's done, it gets easier. The video requirement isn't nearly as rigorous as your old Entries 2 and 3...doesn't end up being nearly as stressful, thank heaven.
I do urge you to join the Renewal group on Yahoo. You'll get lots of help there. But do continue to come here to help others. You always give thoughtful responses!

What WorksYes. The renewal process is the same set of instructions for all certificate areas.

Hello, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. My first opportunity to renew my certification opens in September and I was just wondering if there is anything I can be doing this summer to make things easier. Thank you in advance. Beth
First I want to alert you to a wonderful yahoo renewal group. It's called NBCrenewal. You'll get more help there than anywhere else. Join it and spend some time reading past posts.
However, one of the best things you can do this summer is to read the instructions multiple times and try to get a handle on the PGEs (Professional Growth Experiences) you'll use. You write about 3 PGEs that have been important to your learning and impacted students. There are literally dozens and dozens of things that could qualify as a PGE: trainings and endorsements, programs you started or led, leadership roles you've taken etc. You need to show yourself as a learner and leader and show collaboration, much like you did in Entry 4. You also need to show your use of technology in at least ONE of the PGEs.
So start making some lists, then choose a few (maybe more than the 3 required) and write out details about them: WHY there was a need for this, WHAT you learned, HOW you used the learning, HOW students/colleagues were impacted etc. The strongest ones will stand out and you'll use those in the end.
Hope this helps!

I'm sorry you've had this experience. It's been hard to know what scores are "good enough" because of the way the new components have been released over time. We still don't really know, but answers are getting closer. Once Component 4 is scored THIS CYCLE, the cut score etc. will be calculated and candidates (and CSPs) won't be in the dark anymore.
My response to your question is based on my BEST GUESS of what will likely be the scoring scenario. Based on past experiences, scores near or above 2.75 are likely to be "safe" - meaning they will earn you then points needed to certify.
Component 1 is weighted fairly heavily, so I'm guessing that your 2.7 will be "good enough". It's hard to know, yet about the Component 2 score. IF you do well on Components 3 and 4, you might not need to redo it. However, it just can't be known until you get your scores for 3 and 4. It's an unknown that can't be predicted.
Component 3 is very important. It' weighted the most because with 2 videos, it's almost like a "double" entry. I guess the best advice I can give is to work like crazy this year and hope for the best.
IF you end up needing to do a component a second time, it will be disappointing, but honestly, when you do something a 2nd time, you're a lot smarter about it than you were the first time around. It may not be fun, but it's usually not as hard.
Concentrate this year on giving it your all...then all that's left to do is wait.
Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you, but this is exactly what I'd advise a candidate of my won.
About the books: The WHAT WORKS! book for Components 1 and 2 is available now. I just sent the manuscript for Components 3 and 4 to the publisher. I don't have a date for that one yet, but I hope it will be available about the same time the final version of Component 4 comes out - November-ish. Thanks for asking!
Best wishes to you!

Is it true that the new component 4 is not released until November of 2017? If I completed components 1-3 this last year, does that mean I have to wait a whole year to start component 4?
Unless something has changed it should be out in November of 2016. "Content in the final operational version of the Component 4 Portfolio Instructions and Scoring Rubric to be published in November 2016 will fully supersede all instructions, statements, and positions contained in this Component 4 Pilot Test document."
I suggest, however, that you take a serious look at the C4 Field Test. Even though there could be some minor changes, you'll get a feel for the bulk of what's being asked for...and you might get a head start planning - especially considering what Learning Communities you might be able to use for that part of the Component.
There isn't a Field Test for every certificate area - they've done "representative" Field Tests, so find the one that represents your area. C4 will be essentially the same for ALL certificate areas, much like how the OLD ENTRY 4 was organized. Everyone did almost the same identical things.
Hope that helps!

I am a high school social studies teacher in Northeast TN. I am beginning to work on my NBC in Social Studies- History. I am looking for a mentor to help me get started. For example, how and what to study for the content knowledge exam? What to expect when turning in my portfolio, etc...? Any help on these matters will be much appreciated.
First, I'll direct you to the NB website. At the top of the homepage is a tab called In Your State. If you click there, you'll get some info about TN and you might be able to make a contact.
Next, read the Standards that match your certificate area AND the directions for the Component(s) you plan to do this year - MULTIPLE TIMES. You can't read them too often.
For Component 1, read the Component 1 document which has examples of the types of questions and exercises. Studying these will help you prepare, although generally, you don't need to spend much time on Component 1 until AFTER you've submitted the other components in May. Components 2,3 have their own set of directions, and Component 4 directions will be available in November (but you can look at the Field Test now to get a good sense of what Component 4 will be like if you plan to do it this year).
There are also some other documents that you should take a look at: The GENERAL Portfolio Directions, the Scoring Guide, the Guide to National Board Certification etc. This is a complex, resource-rich endeavor. But summer is an excellent time to look at these documents so that when you're actively working, you'll know where to go for info and answers.
Next, go to Amazon or B&N books and look up: National Board Certification. The WHAT WORKS series of books (hinted at in the opening lines...LOL!) has updates for this new process. The update for Components 1 and 2 is available now and the update for Components 3 and 4 will come out in the late fall - probably November or December. These books will give you a great overview of the NB process and help you specifically prepare both for the Component 1 Assessment AND for the portfolio Components as you do them. Disclaimer - I'm the author of that book series.
Sites like this one are helpful. You can go back and read messages posted throughout the year. Even messages not aimed specifically at YOUR SS/History certificate can be helpful, so read many. Another good site is proteacher.net. HS/MS teachers don't post as often as elementary teachers do, but there's still a lot of great information that ALL candidates can use.
Deciding soon which Components to do this year, if you haven't already, will be helpful. In my district, we generally recommend doing 2 components per year...taking 2 years to complete the process. This makes the time management MUCH more reasonable , but you CAN do as many as you want, 1-4. Personally, I don't recommend doing ONLY Component 1 because working on at least 1 of the other components will be helpful in knowing how to respond to/write to the Component 1 exercises.
I hope these suggestions will be helpful. As you formulate more specific questions, be sure to post. Someone will come along to coach you.

Does anyone know the timeframe for the scores on component one? I took it mid June. I know the old version came out in December...will it be around then?

Just curious...does anyone have info. on scoring criteria. For example, if margins are off is it unscorable or point deductions? What if you forgot to add your candidate number in the corner, etc? Our group was just wondering what types of errors make it unscorable?
Unscorable would mean entire portions your entry are c...See MoreGood question. If margins are off or you didn't double space (for example) the scorers will use a formula to figure out how much of the entry read. The margins wouldn't affect it as much but say you only single spaced, then the assessor would only be able to read about half your entry.
Unscorable would mean entire portions your entry are completely missing.
Candidate ID missing from the corner would most likely be okay as long it was included somewhere in your entry.
Following all the instructions helps the assessor a great deal!

I am a HS ESOL teacher and I would like to become National Boeard Certified but I don't know where to start. Is there a study guide or something to help you prepare for component 1?
This document explains the two types of exercises and shows you several samples.
There is also a book available on Amazon called WHAT WORKS! Successful Strategies for Pursuing National Board Certification Version 3.0, Components 1 and 2. I'm the author and this book shows you how to prepare for Component 1. My update for Components 3 and 4 will be out in November or December.
If you become a candidate, I suggest doing more than just Component 1. In my cohort, we encourage candidates to do 2 Components each year. Doing a Component is helpful preparation for then doing Component 1. The writing you do for Component 2 will help you do better on Component 1.
I hope this helps you.

It's not always easy to find mentors or even other candidates if your district doesn't have any. Here are a couple of suggestions.
On the NB website, [link removed].
Depending on your certificate area, there are a few websites where you can connect with other candidates and NBCTs who come to help. Here are some I know about:
** This one: teachers.net - for all certificate areas ** proteacher.net - for all certificate areas ** Accomplished Teaching: [link removed].
HS/MS certificate areas don't seem to create specialized sites for candidates. :(
What state are you in? Some have many active groups and some few or none.
I hope this helps and that you find support.

I'd estimate that renewal takes about the amount of time that ONE entry took on your earlier attempt(s). It's most like Entry 4, which was difficult for many.
