My student's AR is linked to their grade. Their best score on an AR book read independently in a given 6 weeks goes in the gradebook as a test grade; most of my students have a 100 for this. They also receive a daily grade each week for the number of points they earn. If the requirement is to earn 1 point in a week, for instance, a student who earned 1 point gets a 100 for the point grade, a student who earned 0.5 points would get a 50. My students can also earn extra credit by improving their average per cent correct for the year by 0.5%.
This is not the recommended way to take grades. The percent of point goal earned and the quiz average are the only two consistent grades for ALL students; therefore, they are the only two grades permitted by the AR program.

Has anyone used teams. I teach 7th & 8th grade reading. I need an incentive for my students. Wondering how setting up teams work. Also, has anyone had any experience with home connect.
I have always recognized and rewarded students for the number of points achieved; I was wondering if anyone has instead recognized and rewarded the reading levels achieved (classic, advanced, etc.) rather than points, or do you do both?

My students are rewarded for points, certification levels, improving their reading range, and improving their average % correct. I sorta think we need to recognize as much good work as possible...
I have used this program for years - now we don't have it - I'm not sure what to do now. Has anyone else been in this situation? I guess I can use Bookadventure instead, but I really prefer AR.
Mark PenningtonWhy not have students read and discuss the reading with their parents, who grade the quality of instruction? This provides immediate feedback and better comprehension/vocabulary development than the multiple choice quiz after completing the whole book in AR. There is life after AR? No 12-step program needed :
In an ideal world, this is what would happen. Unfortunately, most of my students come from homes where reading is the last thing on the agenda (in fact, it's not on the agenda most of the time.)
Push for training for the teachers who use the program. Otherwise, it will never be used correctly.
