Hi everyone! I am hoping someone here can lend a hand. I am an elementary Spanish teacher in Canada who will also be teaching Intro Spanish (1X week) to adults. As you can imagine, my experiences and resources are mostly for the little ones. Do any of you know of any great Adult Spanish websites with lesson plans and ideas? Or any tricks of teh trade you can pass along. PLEASE!! Thanks!

Hello all, I have read several of the earlier posts concerning the homeschool vs. P.S. debate and I would like to offer my 2 cents worth. Particularly, I would like to explain why my family has chosen to homeschool, and perhaps educate readers here as to what may motivate the average homeschooler to exercise this choice.
Background I have a B.A. in biblical and theological studies, a minor in history, and some graduate classes in software systems. My father was a teacher, first in a Catholic prep school and then at a community college. My wife is a high school graduate. Her parents have a minimal amount of post- secondary education. We have a 7 year old daughter and are part of a Catholic church where homeschooling is strongly encouraged. There are 200+ children who are homeschooled and there are multiple large active homeschooling co-ops at the church.
My thoughts about P.S. Unlike many other homeschoolers, I do not knock P.S. teachers at all. I most definitely believe that teachers are overworked and underpaid. Teachers have multiple hats to wear (teachers, counselors, surrogate parents, pseudo- clergy, etc) that I strongly suspect impacts the amount of teaching time that they actually have as well as the quality of teaching that can be performed. And whom are teachers paid to teach? A classroom with 20+ kids, not all of whom are behaved and respectful! I wouldn’t hesitate to jack the average teacher’s salary up a good notch, say $40,000 to start and at least $60,000 at retirement for the competent senior teachers. I didn’t have a good experience in either my public or parochial schools but I must admit that some of my negative experiences were self-inflicted. I was very poor at any athletic endeavor due to my small size, low weight, and extremely poor coordination. As a consequence, I did have to deal extensively with being excluded, being taunted, teased, bullied, and the like. Teachers in my early years had a difficulty keeping me busy (I understand things easily and tend to work very fast) and beginning in 6th grade, school became for me a source of boredom. I never got reengaged in learning until college.
I am a new teacher and came across Illinois SB 277 dealing with reducing the number of years of employment required for tenure. Reading through the bill, it sounds to be that it applies to those who were full-time teachers prior to January 1, 1998, and after the date of the bill passage (if it passes). I'm wondering why it doesn't apply to teachers who are hired in the period between those dates? Or am I reading it wrong? Thanks.
About a month ago I posted about the trouble that I was having with a trip for my students to NYC. At first my principal was excited but soon everytime I tried to mention the trip to him he didn't have time to talk to me. Well after September turned into November without any word on when or if he would sign the trip form and take it to the BOE I had given up any hope on the trip. About three weeks ago my principal sends word that he is going to the BOE and will take my trip form with him to be put on the BOE' agenda for the December meeting. I asked him what I should do since the time had come and gone for our students to turn in their first deposits. He said I should have them turn them is and when the BOE approved the trip we would write a check to the tour company. Well, last night was the board meeting and to my surprise our trip was not even on the agenda. I asked our Assistant Superintendent why there was no mention of our trip at the BOE meeting and he said that my principal didn't get it turned in on time. It seems that he did not turn the paper in until earlier this week. Needless to say I am not very happy. I have talked to my principal numerous times this week and he made no mention of the trip not being on the agenda while all the time he knew it would not be included. I have told my students and their parents that we would know more about the trip after the BOE meeting and now I feel I have been made a fool. I feel that he just left me out there hanging and has acted very unprofessional during this whole debacle. I don't really know where to go with this now.
I'm sorry this happened Joe. You have a right to feel discouraged, frustrated and angry. Your principal sounds extremely disorganized or passive-aggressive.
I guess I would explain to the students and parents that no decision was made because the issue was not on the agenda, and that you did all that you could to promote the trip.
Why do schools make you wear uniforms it should be you yourselve and....you picking your own clothes not someschool district I know it is not my choice to make the rules but we should wear our own clothes.
