Do most of these quotes from Sonia Nieto resonate with you?
* I view teachers as transformative intellectuals
* teachers are enthusiastic lifelong learners who are deeply involved in their work and who defend both their students' right to an excellent education and their own rights as intellectuals and professionals.
* these are difficult but also promising times for those who view public education as the last and, in many cases, the only hope for fulfilling our society's stated ideals of democracy.
* addition, the new discourse has supported the "dumbing down" of teachers, that is, the attempt to strip teachers of their creativity and judgment by having them follow repackaged curricula and prescribed pedagogical strategies.
I've met very few teachers who are intellectually engaged in their practice. Even fewer who recognize our role in the dominant hegemony. Nieto writes that what sustains successful teachers is networking with other like-minded teachers. Hence the reason for this post.
Let's talk, organize, and start returning a humanistic, student-centric model to our pedagogy.
Ok, so I have had trouble in school. Today in class, when getting up to get a pencil, I was talking to my friend about a book that involved school violence. It was sci fi, and my friend said, "yeah, well, people shoot each other in schools nowadays anyway." so I replied saying something about how people don't go around.. here's my mistake. without knowing my teacher was watching, I made a motion with my hands to resemble gunfire. My teacher, acting to dence to pay attention to the other kids actually playing a game that involved shooting actions, was infuriated. She told me to get out, and yelled at me in the hall way. Of course, she gave me no chance to explain. They called my house, sent me to the office, and of course exagerrated greatly in the call, saying I was doing innapropriate gestures towards the other students. Here is why I am angry the most. In this same class, a kid got in no trouble for firing projectiles at another student... so I suppose that my finger is a lethal weapon? Anyway, she starts off talking about school shooting in the middle of class-clearly signaling to the other kids that I was another Coulumbine- and how they aren't a joke. What should I do? What has come of the school system today? i'm sick of school and this is why!!!
Does anyone know if there is a rule or legal reason that I can use to not have to teach the FOSS science to my second graders? I do not mind teaching it but I do mind raising bugs and having to wind up killing them because we cannot let them go because they damage the ecosystem. Any help would be appreciated.
I am a college student who is writing a report on home schooling. Does anyone have specific stories about problems they have had with home schoolers? (I am looking for something like this: "I remember one child who left second grade to be home schooled. When he returned to my fourth grade classroom, he could barely read. He was still learning his addition facts when the rest of the class was doing multiplication tables. Not only that, he used to get in fights about once a week with his classmates." If anyone can post a few such stories, I would appreciate it. Thanks. (PS The paper is due soon.)
