i teach GED classes through the Even Start program and am very frustrated at all the excuses i am getting as to why students don't come to class on a regular basis. all of my students are parents - many are teens - i can understand that things come up with kids, etc., but why can't they at least call and explain that.

we provide transportation for our students and also have a program that helps them out with things like rent, car repairs, child care, etc. yet it seems like everything else is more important than getting their GED. i feel useless and like i'm spinning my wheels.

any ideas?
Anne How frustrating that must be. Maybe our society has provided too much for these young parents and they feel entitled to let others take care of them. How sad.

After a week, if the parent does not show up, they are dropped from the program ...See More

The above may be the key. That would be a natural consequence.

However, I also agree with what else the previous poster said: your students have unique needs. I guess you need to be firm, but have...See More
