I am a returning teacher. As the reading specialist at a private school, how can I best aid the beginning reading students who do not have English spoken as the primary language at home? Diana
I ran across this at one of my favorite sites and thought I'd share:

"YOU Can Make a Difference
Frightening stories of the federal and state governments trying to control the curriculula in our classrooms are on the rise--from pre-school to college courses. I wish I could convince all these angry and dispirited people--and everybody who cares about our public schools--to take a $50 risk and become a sponsor of our Songs of Resistance CD.
Don't you think we need some in your face songs for teachers, parents, and students to sing--raising our voices in unison across the country?
For every $50 you contribute, you will receive 5 CDs. These CDs will be sold to the public for $15 each. Part of our money-raising effort is to raise enough money for a massive PR campaign with the CDs.
Don't miss this chance to be a part of resistance history. Teachers and parents acting together can and must take back our schools.
We must stop waiting for politicians or the courts to do the right thing.
We must stop cowering in silence.
Instead, let's stand up and sing. We want to provide the songs that will help teachers and parents sing loudly and with one voice.
Make your check for $50, $100 or any multiples of fifty out to Wisconsing and send it to:
Cap Lee Wisconsing P.O. Box 1776 Milwaukee WI 53201-1776

Do it today! Let our voices be heard.
Musicians are ready with lyrics and music. We need production funds.
I am soliciting information from individuals, teachers, administrators or parents that have had some experience with the Special Education vouchers which are part of a educational program in Florida and Ohio.
Please contact me with your pros or cons regarding the above listed information.
I have two children that are learning disabled thus in Special Education in Alaska.
Last year I pulled my children out of public school as my oldest was suffering daily from bullying and harrassment.
Now I advocate for School Choice. I feel that the monies spent in my son's due process proceeding could have been utilized to further his education, bring him back up to speed and he could have been in a different school. Instead the monies were utilized to pay a Hearing Officer, the District had an Attorney (who does not work for peanuts either) they had to rent space in a church and paid for the transcripts. Not to mention all the hours my husband and I spent on research, time off from work to attend the hearing etc. I feel that if the option was there instead of feeding the bureaucracy our current educational system has created, the child could be focused on, thus spending the money on him.
We just finished due process proceedings today ourselves. I never used to give much thought to school choice and vouchers but it is something I think more and more about every day. Maybe, it would in some cases be the best thing for a child.
BTW what started our whole conflict with the school was a bullying situation. Sad but true, it just escalated from there.

THANKS EVERYONE! IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. A SAMPLE VERSE:
If your schools they are a crumbling test the kids
And congress it is bumbling test the kids
Business wants more competition
And public school demolition
They’re on a hunting expedition
Test the Kids
