iPads a Requirement for 1st Graders

The other day a friend told me that he heard of a school in New York City that required every 1st grader to purchase and have their own iPad in the classroom for the school year. What features does the iPad offer for 1st grade students, in order to make it a requirement, that a regular computer would not?

Hi, I have flatscreen imacs 10.7.5 Many years ago I could set up a log in screen where students could log in on the computer lab computer and save on a server. Is there a way to have students log in and save on the server for this computer. The applications do not need to be on the server, just the student files. Thanks for your advice.
