My dear darling daughter ran a software upgrade on our iMac which needed her to enter her password. After completing the upgrade her password (and mine) are not letting us log in. Any ideas? I would re-format the hard disk except she has coursework for exams on there that she has not yet backed up... GRRRRRRRR
OK...cured! My search for a solution led me to an interesting site - [link removed]

Is it possible to make a powerpoint presentation and play music throughout? My partner says that when she tries, the music starts over with every slide.
Set options for a sound or movie to play during a slide show 1. Select the movie or sound icon you want to set options for. 2. On the Slide Show menu, click Custom Animation. 3. In the Custom Animation dialog box, under Animation order, select the sound or movie, and then click Effect Options. 4. Select the options you want.
ALso:
Compatibility Report: Types of sound files that PowerPoint can use You can insert sounds in the following formats: • Audio Interchange File Format (AIF, AIFF, AIFC) • Apple QuickTime Movie Sound (MOV, MOOV) • Apple System Sound (SFIL) • Apple System Resource Sound (RSRC, rsrc) • CCITT A-Law (European Telephony) Audio Format (ALAW) • CCITT U-Law (US Telephony) Audio Format (AU, SND, ULAW) • Microsoft Windows Waveform (WAVE, WAV) • MPEG Layer 3 Audio (MP3) • Advanced Audio Coding (AAC): MPEG-4 Audio • Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI, MID, KAR) Tips • Some sound formats, such as MP3 and MIDI files, and files with a file size larger than the size set in Preferences, are not embedded in the presentation when you insert them. Instead, they are linked from a location on your hard disk or the Internet. If you move the presentation, make sure to move these sound files with it. To make sure all linked files are included with your presentation, save the presentation as a PowerPoint Package. • If the sound format you want to use is not listed here, you can still play the sound from a presentation by creating a hyperlink to it. Make sure that you have a sound player installed that is compatible with the sound format you want to play.

Does anyone know or use Maya, Poser or any 3d animation software in their classroom? I would love to hear how you implement it into your class. Thanks!

Maya is a tough program to teach k-12. I've had the best luck performing in class examples out of Maya books. My college class used Introducing Maya 8: 3D for Beginners. I think you could make something like this work for high school. My hats off to you teaching such advanced animation. Hope that helps.
I used to know how to repair macs, but they've advanced so much I'm lost. I'm running OSX 3.9. It would NOT boot past the grey screen so I pulled up single user (with instructions, I don't actually know what that means) and got the following info. Can anyone help with:
/sbin/fsck -fy ** /dev/rdisk0s5 ** Root file system ** Checking HFS Plus volume ** Checking Extents Overflow file. ** Checking Catalog file. disk0s5: I/O error. disk0s5: I/O error. Keys out of order (4, 1637) **Rebuilding Catalog B-tree disk0s5: I/O error. ** The volume could not be repaired.
I don't know what to do now. **sigh** It looks bad.
If the format fails, your HD disk is shot. Good Luck, N.

I got a keys out of order message too. Tech Tool Deluxe recommended getting a 3rd party utility and if that failed to erase and reinstall. I decided to go ahead and wipe the hard drive. I hooked another Mac to mine with firewire and then started the problem computer in target mode. I copied my important data and then I erased the problem computer's hard drive and reinstalled. It is now working very well. I have Tiger so I don't know if that will make a difference.
Hi there! I need some help with iDVD. I hope my explanation makes sense. I have made iDvd slideshows before. I thought I knew quite a bit, it can be pretty basic, drag and drop pics, add music, transitions etc. However a man at work presented a DVD. He showed many slides with music and it was great. BUT instead of returning to the main menu theme and clicking on a second slideshow, he somehow after the first set of pics had a submenu appear and then it automatically went into the next set of slides. Does this make sense? It was much smoother and I want to know how he did that. Any help would be appreciated.

I work at a private school that does not have much $$ for it's technology department. We are running old iMacs with OS 8 & 9. Due to the lack of $$ we don't have the money to purchase educational software for the lab within the next year (nor do I think any new software would work on these old computers).
This in mind, I can't help but imagine that there must be schools out there who have upgraded to the latest technology and still have old no-longer- being-used software that would work on our computers. Does anyone know where old software can be found? or, even better, does anyone have old Mac software that they no longer are using???
I have checked Ebay.....didn't have anything. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

The idea of talking to other districts in my area seems easy, but being a first year teacher I see no sign of a network. Especially since we are a private school. A bit more isolated. Any other ideas out there?

I will be presenting a workshop in a couple of weeks dealing with "integrating technology into the curriculum". Does anyone have any suggestions for things I should include. The workshop will be for K-4 teachers. Didn't know if I should start with state curriculum standards...software programs, Blooms levels??? Would appreciate any ideas.
Most teachers appreciate "make and take" workshops - not lecture reading or watching video tapes they could do themselves if given the material.
SO... how about any one set of the following:
Technological Research
How to search the web using Boolean language How to have students make and electronic citation record How to search for images and give citation How to check student reports for copy/paste plagiarism using searching.
Alternatives to "Term Papers"
Student PPT and oral presentation - (emphasize that PPT is a presentation tool; not for writing sentences or novels) Podcast either audio or movie Slide show (photo essay for students with poorer written skills)- "Our class field trip to XX" [maybe a web page or DVD for open house] Photographs of students working, or realia projects *[run on TV or video projector in waiting area at conference time.
House Keeping
Electronic grade books Email communications with parents Class web page (maybe designed by "advanced" students in place of one of the above) Class video or DVD for parent teacher conferences (see above)*
How to use a video projector or SmartBoard™

Hello, I plan on building a mini mac lab in my room this year using 1st gen imacs seeing as how they are selling for next to nothing on ebay. My question is "How do I create a common drive between the computers so that files can be shared between the different computers?" any help on this topic would be great.
Thanks Neal, I will probably be using a maximum of 4 computers so this should work fine. I have a router packed away and I hope that we will have internet access by the start of the year (new school site). Thanks again. If all users are on different sites. By caching on the master machine it might not be as noticeable if all were on the same site.
