I am the computer tech at a campus that uses Apple computers. We use the AR reading program. We've purchased some new Intel computers and was wondering if anyone has experienced any trouble with their AR program since installing it on the new Apple Intels. Please let me know of any problems or if it runs OK. Thank you. roadrunnertech
I have 11 flatscreen iMacs to set up on a network that runs the macintosh manager where students log into their account with a password. In past years the network admin has set these up on our network. This year I am trying to figure out how to do it myself. Are there step by step directions to follow? I know that I want the iMac to log into a list of students that is already created on the server and I want to individually administer each computer from the computer itself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lorraine
There's special server and remote access software that you need access & pass words to use.
You'll need some training as to how the network/server operates.

Found out my new imacs running system 10.4.1 won't run my old Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing program. So, looking to order again. I've been happy with Mavis, but was wondering what was used in other schools?

You could do search for online typing activities. I found a few sites for primary grades. My current school uses Type to Learn but is would not be appropriate for middle level. I teach 3+4.
Ultra-Key is a good program. I use it for grades 3-8. You can even add your own text for typing tests and integrate technology into core subjects. It is a multi- platform applicatioon.

This links to a review and download link of a collection of free software for OS X. Check out some of the titles and categories. Perhaps there is something that someone can use.
New lab running the before mentioned system software. We have an administrator and then a generic student login.
I understand the 2ndary users can be locked out of certain software. How do I do all this? I know to be logged in as the adminstrator, but I want to keep my kids out of a lot of the different software and then open them up as they learn more. I only see a few of the preinstalled software on my securites list. (We used to have foolproof and I loved it!)
Another question. I installed Mavis Beacon as the admin. Then the students use it and it works but gives error messages. If you run the program as an admin, there are no errors. What do I need to do?
I might be trying to do something that isn't possible in the first place then.... ? on mac OSX versions, are the restricted accounts meant to be used with a mac server as far as the restrictions and rights? at this school there is no mac server, they are all windows 2k Advanced server (might be upgraded to 2003 next spring) ... the students all have folders on the server they can access to store their work and pick up work from teachers (still trying to get a drop box to work across the platforms but after four years I'm about ready to give up with that idea) but other than some networked software, the only reason the students access the servers is to store their files. The software in question that we'd like to install on the machines in this mac lab are site license software or lab packs.... etc..... which presents a problem when we try to lock the student logins down to prevent the curious ones from changing any and all system preferences, or just poking around the computer in places they don't need to be, if the student account is locked down any software we add only half way works.... if we leave it open for the software the students are turning off wireless signals to annoy teachers at the least :)
If these were windows based machines I would say I need to find the program folder and give "all users" full control of the folder on the individual machine as it sounds like the computer needs to edit a file or two every time the program is used and can't access that file otherwise.... is there a mac equivalent to this action?
Thanks for the help :)

Your building or district needs to get/use a copy of Server Admin Tools that come with OSX server to do the types of things you want to do correctly (Advanced e.g. non-generic user profiles).
AFAIK OSX server is supposed to support Windows boxes, do not know about any Win product that would support OS X boxes.

There's help forums and some pdf files that you can look over.

Hello, just wondering if anyone knows of a program/certificate the teaches you how to teach ESL online? I currently teach ESL during the day to young students and at night to adults. I would love to start my own online tutoring/teaching ESL business...just need the tools.
I know TESOL.org has a certificate program. Have any of you taken courses for teaching ESL online thought TESOL? Do you know of any other programs?
I've found some good kids songs/videos on YouTube that I would like to download onto my iBook then put into my iTunes Library for future play. Are there any good applications out there for this? Thanks for all your replies!
YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse vi...See MoreYouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.
YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.
Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.
I am having trouble installing Adobe Flash plug-in on my school district issued iBook G4, it has Tiger. I have researched Adobe's website and tried many trouble shooting tips and I still cannot get it to install, I get an error message saying that the installation failed and a manual install button comes up. When I click on this it brings me back to download the plug in again. I've tried playing with preferences, uninstalling, installing again and restarting, etc. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Thanks!
We didn't let end users install anything... too easy to cause network problems with apps that "phone home" media players et al.
If you have user rights to install software let me know. Eliminate the obvious first.

I have discussed this with the Tech department, the IT person has tried to download the plug in/player without any luck. According to Adobe's website, the error message that I am getting means the permissions are not set correctly and must be changed in the Terminal. I haven't done this before so I was a little hesitant and hoping that there might be another option. I am the Technology Teacher for the school and I am trying to do this on another teacher's laptop.
