In my dock, I now have an icon for system profiler. Why is it there?

I fixed it! I looked and looked on the computer to find my hard drive but couldn't figure anything out. Then I decided to turn it off and turn off the plug connection strip. It worked. When I restarted, everything came back.
Hi, I received the macbook this summer. When I hook it up to the projector, I can see the background, but none of the file icons or the dock that I can see on the computer screen. It will let me run a powerpoint show. The tech has come in and got it to show the whole computer screen once, icons and all--but he can't get it to work again. Because of this, none of the files I want to use, other than powerpoint, can be seen. Has anybody else had a problem like this? How did you fix it? Thanks for your help!!!!

Hi Greg, Thank you so much for your reply. It is helped me too. Mr. Salazar
I work in a district that uses mainly MACS. Actually, MACs are the only computers I've ever used since that's what I had in the classroom. Now I work in a support role with all elementary schools. I sometimes have people question (gripe) about why we use Apples/Macs. I've been told that they are : 1. more user friendly and 2. less susceptible to viruses.
Thought I'd pick your brains a bit. Which do you prefer and if you use Macs, could you give me further "Pluses" to mention?
Less career advancement opportunity for them, less budget for them, less job security, less old computers to throw into the trash, (CO2 concerns?),
AND
Macs are now bilingual in various ways. Intel Macs run Mac OS, and Windows, and easy to switch between the two OS's.
AND
Shouldnt schools be on the cutting edge of technology? Historically, what is being done with the Macs, will be done a few years later on the Windows machines.....

Just as a correction to the original post: The Amiga multimedia computer was around in 1985 and was light years ahead of Macs/PCs. Many still regard the Amiga as the best computer ever made. It may have been about 1990 until Macs/PCs were able to do much with multimedia, but they were trailing behind in that area. Even without the Mac, there were indeed many other choices besides PCs (Atari's Falcon was also impressive). Apple seems to like to rewrite computer history and erase everything other than Macs/PCs ;)
I just purchased a new imac and iWork '08. I am obviously very behind the times. I didn't know until I was shopping for the imac that AppleWorks is not on the newer computers. Is there a way to convert AppleWorks files to iWorks? If so, how? Thanks for any help you can give me on this! Jan

I am a teacher in New England looking to connect to another elementary classroom to set up ichat pen pals. Our goal is to connect with other children in another part of the country. I teach Kindergarten.
I am shoppng for an inexpensive camcorder that will be used with a ibook pro. I have found several reviews that complain about difficulties with connecting the cameras to the macs.
I am thinking of going mini dv. If ou have recently purchased one that you are pleased with, please tell me.
The one camera that I used that will not work with my Mac has been the one that saves the film to a mini-cd. I thought I could use the camera and then edit the film using iMovie.... it did NOT work....... You can also get a list of supported cameras at the Apple website.... Just do a search for cameras......

True you can't use it right from the dvd but I have been able to use footage that students took with those cameras in the older version of iMovie. You need to finish the DVD in the camcorder then rip the DVD with Handbrake or other utility. You will then be able to edit the footage. So if you still have the camera there is a work-around.
The new iMovie supposedly imports footage from these cameras but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.
