I have a new Mac I bought specifically for IMovie. I am having a hard time with it- the Mac tht is, and IMovie. What are the basic differences between operating a Mac and PC?

The important differences are buried inside and you don't need to work with them unless you want to. The underlying software is quite different between the two OS's.
I work daily with Linux, Apple, and Windows. Mostly they are the same (sorry!). Programs all work about the same. The menu in most programs contains about the same options. There are quirks, but not many.
Most GUI interfaces include a Dock. It may go by a different name. Windows calls it a start bar. You can access your programs here. Apple goes one step better than Windows and one step worse in this area.
1. In Windows, clicking START gives you access to all the programs 2. In Mac, you must find the Applications folder in Finder on your Dock. Then you have access to all the programs. (inconvenient) 3. On the other hand, Mac goes one better by allowing you to place your most-used programs right on the dock.
You can minimize and maximize windows on a Mac with the colored dots. This is like the strange symbols on a PC. The only differences here are cosmetic. The real difference is that to quit a Mac application, you must use the menu on a Mac. A PC lets you do it right on the buttons.
Mac has a preset filing system. Windows is moving in this direction. This allows you to have some organization. (I used to scatter my files all over back in DOS and Windows 3.1 days.)
Mac has a slight advantage in usability, but it is not as large as one would think. As I noted, they are mostly the same. People "freak" over the cosmetic differences, but this is because it isn't what they're "used to".
Don't be afraid to "play". Computers are hard to damage. Also, try asking some more specific questions. I've offered advice here from the perspective of one who is comfortable with 3 different systems and what I see migrating between them.
Let us know. Mac users are very friendly and helpful people!
On the top of the screen there's a menu bar on it you'll see Help - go there you'll be surprised!.
Also iMovie has a Help menu item (as do most Mac applications)
Lastly I have included a link to Mac 101 a very helpful website.
Once you have RTFM come back with specific questions and you'll get more help than the generic kind. . .

I answered on the other board but....
Pressing the option key, shift and k at the same time in most fonts gives you the apple symbol. Not sure it will show up but I'll try it....
If you meant the command symbol (the propeller thing) then use Wingdings font and type a z.
Out of nowhere, the sound quit working on my laptop. I went to system preferences and looked under sound. The internal speakers don't show up anymore, and volume can't be turned up or down. The volume arrow is a light color and can't be used. How could this happen? Or better yet, what in the world happened? Can anyone help? Thanks.
Are there any key strokes that will give me the division sign? Not the slash but the one that looks like a colon with a line in between the dots? Thanks

Ever since I upgraded to Leopard (which I LOVE!) I have had problems with iPhoto quitting unexpectedly. I upgraded to iLife '08 thinking that might be the problem and it seems to be a little better, but still quits a lot. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Quit iPhoto. One of the first things you can do is delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple DOT iPhoto DOT plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Deleting DOT plist files is the first Apple says to try when troubleshooting application problems. When you restart the app it will recreate that file. Couldn't post using a . hand to type out word.
BTW you do have a backup of your iPhoto library? Copy the entire iPhoto library (users SLASH YOURNAME SLASH pictures) that is on your mac to an external hard drive (or burn to a CD or DVD depending on size) then everything is saved. Albums, folders, keywords, ratings, etc.
If there are irreplaceable photos I'd keep a copy of that in a safety deposit box... if you have a fire or a break in and the computer is lost or stolen all your photos would be gone.
Hopefully 10.5.1 will fix that when it comes out.

I am using Microsoft Word on an intel MacBook. When I download clip art from Microsoft's online collection I cannot access it. It shows up on my desktop but I can't upload it into Word. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!
I can get clip art using the method you described but when I try to enlarge the image you can see the pixels, it is not clear as with other clip art.

Once more, i have another computer -- this time I got it from Freecycle. It is an older iMac with OS 9.1 and has 512 MB of memory, The largest unused block is 435.3 and i want to know if i can put OS10 on it? the reason I am asking is I can't load AOL on it even tho I have an older disk they told me to use. I am pretty sure I could get AOL for my iMac OS10 then.
I bought the OS 10 program when I updated my older computer that had OS09 on it and have heard that I can legally use it on 2 of my own computers. I also have the free update for teachers using OS10 somewhere. . . Should I just go ahead and update it to OS10 so that would solve my AOL problems? I know the former owner used AOL as their internet provider. . .but they deleted a lot of stuff off the computer.
The main reason I want to get on the internet on that computer is to access Apple to find out what to do to upgrade it myself. It came with no manuals or info.
Whatever advice you can give me will help. THANKS!

I know -- I just thought if it told me to do something, I could try it at the same time since I would have to shut down computer, unplug the internet connection and plug it into the other one before I could do anything. I have older books that were concerning MY Mac and my imac which is newer than the one I queried about already.

I am aware of that -- that's how I got the info for Greg. All my computers had something like that for the past 11 years. A model # would get you to the manuals. > > Is the iMac an iFruit? (wild colors like orange, grape, > blueberry)?
I never heard of that term and you could have seen that it is blueberry if photobucket would have let me load more than the one photo. Yes it is blue on the sides. When I bought my first imac in 2000, I got the white one because it was called snow so I didn't know it was called ifruit. WHAT does that "i" stand for anyway. . . iPHONE, iMac, iPOD etc. Ü Is that Apples big secret? > > You should be able to run VERY EARLY versions of OSX, but they > were very buggy of themselves, so I'm not certain it would be > wise to do so but that's your call.
Well without the internet on that computer you can't use Sherlock. I guess that's now so bad. I have plenty of old software that is games and card making and such that I can use on it. It has Appleworks and Microsoft Office on it .
MY BIGGEST "PROBLEM" now is how to move the icons on the desk. I want to trash some of them that aren't even available because they are software the people who owned the computer had and not me. I can't figure out how to even move the icons on the desk but maybe I will be able to find that in the "manual" you directed me to. I wasn't teaching that year and a friend who is a teacher got it for me because she has PC computer . The update for teachers is 10.2 because I still have it in the manilla envelope she sent it in. It also has 9 in it. . .
Thanks! Paulie

I made a file on GarageBand 3 then brought it home on a flash stick to work on. But my version at home is GarageBand 4. It's not working. Am I able to fix this?
There are known "opening issues" for GB4, Does it open ok for new files and not just this file? Are you "opening" or "importing" the file?

Sorry, I know that I should have had more details. I was just really frustrated! I'm working with my IT's Apple MacBook Pro OS 10.4 which has GarageBand 3 on it. I thought I could just copy it and bring it home and continue working on it. I'm using my son's new MacBook which has Leopard on it. I guess I can't do that. I thought since you can open an older appleworks document with a newer version of appleworks, it would work here. I guess not. Thanks for taking time in reading my first question.
I ran across this article today that some may want to be aware of. I checked all of our new iMac's and could not find the problem. I have calibrated all of the monitors and do not know if this would have any effect.
My isight camera on my macbook isn't working. The green light is on, but there isn't a picture. It works in the quick time broadcast program, but not photobooth. Any suggestions?

Mine didn't work one day, and I was told to zap the PRAM and that also worked. Pam
