What to Do With Students Who Finish Early?

I have a few middle school students that finish art assignments early, what can I have them do while the rest of the kids are finishing up an assignment?

Artistikate If the early finishers are consistently the same kids, you could start them on an "in-between" project. A project that would be simple enough that they could work independently after a small amount of instruction, but detailed enough that they will have plenty to do while you work with the rest of the class. NJArt I have a lot of "How to draw..." books, and a bin of calender pictures if they want a reference photo. they first need to make sure all of their past projects are done, too.

Late Bloomer So what would be some good in between projects, something that they could work on for 15-30 minutes tops? My class is only 45 mins so I am running into the problem where I give an assignment and it takes 10-15 minutes to instruct/manage and most of my students don't quite get to finish that day. My class is only 45 mins so I am running into the problem where I give an assignment and it takes 10-15 minutes to instruct/manage and most of my students don't quite get to finish that day. Usually the next time I see them, a third may finish in 10- 15 minutes and others may work almost through the whole period if they are less focused or chatters or simply slower workers. I'm trying to get them to all start at the same time on the next assignment. Perhaps I should let some kids take their assignments home to finish and bring back, but that can become a big can of worms. I'm a roaming art teacher so it's a bit tricky. I can't say comeback later and work on it.

Late Bloomer Well,I recently told my students that if they finish early they can either read one of my art books, free draw or work on homework from another class. I may have to see how that plan works for the first time this week and really enforce it cause, I don't want to start a new lesson in the middle of class or in between projects this week. The next as...See MoreWell,I recently told my students that if they finish early they can either read one of my art books, free draw or work on homework from another class. I may have to see how that plan works for the first time this week and really enforce it cause, I don't want to start a new lesson in the middle of class or in between projects this week. The next assignment is kind of intense and I want as many kids as possible on the same page when we start. So there might be a lot of free drawing time this week. Plus I am sure I can talk away 5 or 10 minutes easily.
