I've been teaching at a private school for 10 years and love it but am tired of the low pay. Anyone have any insight into comparing private and public? I have great flexibility and autonomy in my art program. The kids are great and I get plenty of art supplies. But there is always that money issue! What to do?
It is a difficult and personal decision certainly. I struggle with this weekly. I was in business previously and I make 1/3 of my previous salary but my soul is enriched and I feel that I am helping kids and not dealing with broken, manipulative adults. I can move to a public unionized school and make more money but I will deal with many more issues. I have to ask myself if I am strong enough to do this. It isn't just the money. More abused kids, more drugs, more violence, etc. There is no question that the socioeconomic conditions affect children. If you have an extremely nurturing, giving, altruistic soul then you should consider the move. I think you will teach less art and more life. You will make a difference but it may take a real toll on you emotionally. I wish I felt stronger personally to do this. Good luck!
