Welcome to the Beginning Learners Chatboard. This chatboard is for teacher to discuss classroom methods and lesson plans for teaching beginning learners.
I have raised three children to responsible adulthood and taught nursery school, kindergarten, first, second, third, and fifth grades, high school home economics, and college education and methods courses and would argue that I have had beginning learners at every level.
When I looked at this chatboard I was thinking about getting started--finding out what any new learner knows and can do and discovering ways and finding opportunities to help them acquire or gain the skill, knowledge or comprehension they are looking for
I knew that I would not have made a good teacher of the little ones. My niche was definitely with the older kids who could sort of tale care of themselves.
Once I was in one of the K's room at the first of the school day. Teacher was calm, organized and had their attention. When "Johnny" forgot the class rules, she sweetly and calmly asked "Johnny" what he was supposed to be doing. He suddenly remembered.
DeAnnSpeaking as a kinder teacher, I am sure glad other educators want to teach middle and high school. It's great that we each have our own age we like to teach. What a shame if we all liked the same age!
Gayla KingI use YouTube video every day in kinder. I download what I want, in unit folders, on my portable hard-drive. When I am teaching the unit, I put the unit folder on my desktop, at school. Easy AND organized for use! gintexas

In the past week, I have been working with 2 year olds at VBS. I had forgotten how much you had to be withit to work with these kids. It is such a challenge.

maryYou might want to check into Web 2.0 tools that you can implement in your lessons. They can be used in any subject that you teach. One day I met a line of K's very late in the school year. They were quiet, keeping their hands to themselves and all that they were supposed to do, except for one little boy at the end of the line(new student) who was doing his own thing, but doing it quietly, at least.
The teacher, smiled as we passed and whispered, "We didn't raise him".
You could ask them to think about their year and tell you what they liked learning about and what was the best memory they will carry with them. They could do this verbally or in writing.
They could make thank you notes to the custodian, principal, school counselor, and/or school secretary.
Or, you could play games, sing songs, or dance. for ideas, click below:
I always match sign language to teaching the alphabet in my class as well as an action. Then the students go into pairs or teams to make the shape with their bodies. IT seems to help the kindergarten students to match sounds to the letter shapes. Ruth
