All of my students African American and hispanic and I am Asian. On the first day in the hallway one student yelled, "who's this gook?" ok I did not know who said it. I feel that most of these students are racist against me. I laid down the rules and procedures and gave the students the contracts. A few of the alpha females are testing me and dehumanizing me. One of them interupted my lecture and walked in front of the class and ripped my student contract in half and she said "now what are you gonna do? " I wrote her up but my God what a horrible week. One day I had to block the door to my classroom so that three African american students could not come in because they were not in my class. I check the schedules. I have been called "Ms.Lee" and that is NOT my name. It is because I am Asian they want to be mean. I have stopped a Hispanic student from coming in the room because he was not there and been told that I was "racist against Mexicans". I told a student not to put his feet on the chair and told that I was "racist against blacks." All the students talked about was "crack cocaine" the first day. I told them that that language and subject was not acceptable in my class. I had 7 write-ups the first week and now the administration thinks I am a weak teacher. The other teachers get talked down to and disrespected and walked all over and they do not enforce discipline nor write students up. I saw one student tell a teacher to "SHUT UP!" and that teacher just turned around and walked away without writing him up. Admin thinks he is a great teacher because he gives them no write ups.
What am I gonna do? Also the first week, I had a cold and a fever and to top it all off, I got a speeding ticket today on my day off from the police. Will this ever get better?? I feel so angry inside and physically sick. Students here are in gangs and I honestly feel that I am a prison guard instead of a teacher. Some of these kids are seriously BAD. I have tried to tell them to stay after class to talk to them and they put their hand in my face and say "NO". I have not had a lunch break for 5 days because I spent my lunch break writing infractions on their behaviors.
I suspect the racial issue is huge in this situation and goes beyond just learning class control. I live near a major city and know of some outstanding white teachers who were run out of inner city city schools by parents simply because they were not of color. In one situation the kids loved the teacher and their math scores were tops...it was the parents that were the problem. This doesn't always happen, but sometimes it does

Get out of that school! You do not deserve to be called a "B______", do you?
Connecting with a few, even if that is possible, is not enough to keep going to that toxic place and being abused, yes, ABUSED.
You are being treated badly and called a racist by a bunch of RACISTS. Do you deserve this? Only you can answer this.
There are schools out there where you will not be discriminated against and called a racist and cursed.
Wanting to be a teacher is noble, but what you are doing is NOT teaching and it is NOT your fault.
Please read the posts from the new teacher, Fanny Phoenix, which might be more relevant to you that what I, an old teacher, might write.

I am ESL certified but need to be bilingual certified in order to find a job in texas. I've taken the bilingual supplemental exam twice. I desperately need some resources.
I have one class with six students that are very disruptive. I have written all of them up. They came back with a vengence and almost started a riot in my class. I told them to leave my class and they would come back in every 5 minutes. I tried to tell one student he could not come back in without a pass and tried to close the door and he physically would not allow me to close my classroom door. I have been told "F-- you"-- " I don't want to be in your damn class!!" "F--ck this sh--T" and you are a mean teacher. One student enjoys seeing me mad and upset and hurt. She smiles and yelled at me five times or more "YOU ARE A MEAN TEACHER!! " These kids constantly come back to my room although I tell them to go to the office. There are no hall monitors in the basement of this school. The students are all liars. They challenge me. When I tried to move the loud ones, one guy stood up from his chair and wanted to fight me saying "WHY SHOULD I MOVE? DAMN!!! WHY THE HELL SHOULD I MOVE?" AFter telling him several times to move he did not. I feel physically sick working here. I feel that these students have mental problems, aggression and behavioral problems and have racial hate towards me. The students from this inner city TITLE I school normally get sent to an alternative school but they are so backed up and won't accept any new students. These students make me physically sick, so I am not doing so well right now.

ZodeaAre you applying at private schools? Sometimes they hire people from non-traditional backgrounds more quickly than public schools. Also consider subbing at private schools. They often do not have as large pool of subs to choose from.
I am staring my associates in teaching and my philosophy of teaching is coming due. I have been racking my brain over this and can't find a place to start. I've done research and have stared writing numerous times. Nothing has worked or clicked for me yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Everyone really does have an underlying philosophy of teaching but we don't know it. What's your belief about school? What's the purpose of school? That has a lot to do with your philosophy of teaching.
What do you see the role of school as being in society? I can give you my answers to those questions.
I believe that schools first should provide a safe place for America's children to be everyday. In addition to safety, schools should be places of learning that teach children real world skills and foster healthy social and emotional maturity.
A teacher's role is first to work to ensure the safety of the children placed in their care. The safety of children in school should not simply be assumed but should be a goal towards which a teacher works everyday. In addition to safety, a teacher's role is to be a guide to children on the learning journey that is school.
The least thing that a teacher does is implement the mandated curriculum. To create a productive and position learning environment, a good teacher sees the classroom as a community. A good teacher plans lessons that are developmentally appropriate and in the best situation those lessons are also inviting of students' attention. Last but not least, teachers should always model the same behavior they expect of children.

Thanks, I needed this.
