Hi,

Do you know of any states with English teacher shortages? I really want to work, and I'm getting desperate. I don't want to settle for just anything, but I'm getting tired of just subbing.
good luck with that! If you have been reading these boards for any length of time, you would know that there are many, many people in your shoes and that there is no state, repeat, no state, with a shortage of English teachers, or even special ed teachers for that matter. If you can teach foreigh languages or higher math, then MAYBE.

flutetoot I can tell you, I've been looking now for almost 5 years and there is no state in the Northeast that needs English teachers. In fact, we average over 50+ candidates for every position posted. The sad thing is my onw state's websiate says that English teachers are a shortage area - what a joke!!

Math Teach Even having a math degree wont get you a math job. No, no, no. Hartford, CT and other "cities" want teachers from their neighborhoods to teach their kids. So if you're from the suburbs, don't even bother applying.

the overseas teaching experience You may want to consider international schools as well if your main goal is to get experience with your own classroom while teaching English. I'd suggest checking the school's certification (if it's through WASC, SACS, etc -- those are the same groups that certify U.S. schools) and talking with their current American teachers.
