I graduated about a year ago with a degree in Secondary Education / English. I consider myself intelligent and have even tutored college students in material related to my subject, and I like being around children I have a lot of great ideas that I learned in college, not necessarily from the teacher education courses in undergrad, some from experience, some from study skills electives, and some from my non-Education core.

In spite of all of this, I can't find a teaching position. I've looked and looked and looked and even took to subbing, which was absolutely awful; the students didn't care if I was working on my master's degree, PhD, or my GED! (and, perhaps, treated me like the latter.) I think I'm going to get a short certificate for some trade and do that next year if I can't find full-time employment. delehla Don't get too discouraged. It's a difficult market right now for all college graduates. Luckily with secondary English you might be able to find a job in editing, journalism, copywriting, or even as an adjunct instructor at a community college or career tech. DifferentiateTHIS! Everyone has to sub for a while. Anyway, teaching sucks. I would go for a trade. Seriously.

Never give up if you really want to change some lives one at a time. I was hired the week after school started.
