My third grade grandaughter is in love with a series about a doll by Anne M. Martin. Anne Martin wrote the 1980s series "The Babysitter's Club and The Babysitter's Little Sister". It is good to see her with a new series.
I enlisted after having taught several years, and have quite a bit to say about the pros and cons of Army training. Soldiers may disagree with me, but teachers understand how important it is to develop instruction based on how people actually learn.
From an Amazon.com review: "As a student who plans to be a teacher this book really spoke to me. He makes it easy to relate so many things that happened during basic training to being in a classroom with a bunch of new students. The drill sergeants weren't the best role models for a beginning teacher, but perhaps I could learn just as Rich Stowell did from observing his NCOs."
riceless by Tom Davis is important reading. His earlier book, Scared also addresses the the realities of sex trafficking. Both books are reads that should change your life and the way you think. Must reads!!
Our school has a difficult time managing books(specificaly the texts for English classes). We start with 100 copies of a title, 6 teachers use the book, and then at the end of the year we only have 40 copies!! There is no accountability at this point.
What "BEST PRACTICES" can you share in order to run a book room well?
I am looking for a short chapter book for 5-6 grade level that is good for Halloween time. We would like to tie in some literature activities with it and are trying to stay away from the witches and typical gory Halloween stuff. We used "Something Upstairs" last year but are looking for something new. Any suggestions?
Hopefully you are all excited about this coming school year! I know I am my usual excited with an ounce of anxiety! Even after ten years of teaching, I still feel anxious as each new year begins as I anticipate my new classes and all the new faces that will come in my classroom door. Still, I am comforted in knowing the anxiety will go away as soon as I settle in the routine of the school day and that I will then take on the anticipation for the coming school year and its challenges.
For new teachers, or those that just haven't found the comfort of the classroom yet, I wrote a book (A Lesson Plan for Teachers, New and Old) to help with the anxiety. It features chapters on many of the anxieties and problems faced by new or struggling teachers from working with parents and administrators to handling the paperwork required by the "job," including lesson planning, grading, and home reporting. Link to the publisher site to see a listing of chapters and to read a free sample of the text. With practical advice and real life stories, my book will help you find the happiness and joy you should have in this rewarding career.
The book is a quick and easy read; it is not an overwhelming catalogue of policies handed to you by most districts on these first days of school. In addition, it is very affordable for those on that first year teaching salary! It is available on Amazon or at the publisher's site, Lulu. At Lulu, it is also available in download format for a more economic option.
Good luck in this new school year, Michele A Lesson Plan for Teachers, New and Old: A Guide for Student Teachers, New Teachers, and the Experienced Ones!
The Huffington Post recently posted an interactive list of the nine best science fiction novels for young adults. These are books they felt should be required reading for any teenager.
This site, Newbery Award Winners, provides a comprehensive list that chronicles the Newbery Winners from each year and provides links to purchase many of these books. In addition, links are provided, when available, to literature units that have been created for these books.
Does anyone read the Jack Reacher series by Lee Chld. I just finished 61 Hours and the ending is not conclusive. It makes you think the author is killing off Reacher the main character. After 10 or more books, I am addicted and hope he did not kill him off. Anyone heard any information on this?
