I used to have a link to a cute printable bottle that had blank popcorn pieces in it...can't find it :( The kids would find the popcorn word in the real bottle (filled with unpopped popcorn) and then color the matching word on the sheet. Anyone know what I'm talking about? And...where I can find it?
Hi, I am looking for the same printable blank popcorn pieces. The kinderhive site has been redesigned just for parents. Does anyone know where I can find these now?
I googled "popcorn words" and it actually brought me back to Teachers.net.....the Gazette section that has all of the printables.
Here are the popcorn words from the Aug 2003 gazette:

Thanks for reminding me about the Popcorn words!

We have an extremely bright daughter whom we held back a year before entering kindergarten. Summer birthday, very small in size. We did this because socially, she was not ready. She did not want to go to kindergarten until Christmas time. Her preschool teachers (had the same teachers for 2 years in a row) did not feel she was ready for kindergarten either. Her biggest "handicap" is that she would not talk. She wouldn't answer a question when asked, wouldn't say hi when spoken to, etc. At home, she is the "normal" child.
Her K teacher just told me that something needs to change. She says socially she does talk. I teach in the same school as my children go and question this comment by what I am observing and what my daughter tells me. She still won't talk to the special teachers, plays by herself a lot at recess and free time, went w/o a favorite food at lunch because she didn't want to ask where the spoons were...
Conferences are this week and she told me to come up with a plan of what we want done with her. A readability test will be done Mon., we are all expecting her to be at least at a 2nd grade reading level. Her 2 suggestions are we send her onto 1st grade or we send her to 2nd grade just reading. Another concern here is I already have a 2nd grader whom is at the top of the class with the levelized books. Younger daughter will be at is level, possibly passing up the 2nd grader.
Daughter is naturally bright, not because of what we have taught her... everyone involved with her agrees with this. Math is strong also, but not as strong as she is in reading.
Does anyone have any ideas, concerns of these 2 suggestions, or add any other suggestion. Our district does not have a gifted program...even if they say we do.

I believe that you little girl is very bright. Is she shy or does she have any anxioties? (sp) If she only us comfoterble talking at home she may have Select Mutism. Talk to your doctor or theripst. It may also just be a phase.
I am a kindergarten teacher who used building blocks along with writers'workshop, and a lot of balanced literacy activities. We are being forced to select a basal series K-5 for next year. We all love building blocks and see how great our kids do with it. Does anyone use a basal series and still incorporate 4 blocks instruction? Are there any series that work better with this kind of philosophy than others? Please tell me the good and bad of this arrangement.
I like the idea of writing beginning in second semester with the modeling and leading up to it done at the beginning of the year. However, my class writes the equalivant of their own prediciable sentence- I like- I see, I have etc. Did I make them too dependent on I sentence starter? I also like Kidwriting. I welcome your thoughts.

I welcome your > thoughts. I had the same experience last year...very simple, controlled, patterned and boring writing. I did not do as many predictable charts first semester (SHHH! I know they are powerful, but I just felt they led to a group of stifled writers). We have only been writing daily for 2 weeks now, but I'll tell you what...they are writing with voice, about many topics, and do not seem to have the same controlled vocab. last year's group did. Of course, it is a whole different group. I'll let you know where we end the year compared to where last year's group ended.
I still do the predictable charts alternating with a poetry book each week. I do the Building Blocks Name activities and Morning Message as well. I started writing in the beginning of the year; however. Writer's workshop (Lucy Calkins) is wonderful and I believe my kids' writing has improved dramatically this year with my incorporating the WW.
Does anyone know where we can purchase or obtain a copy of the songs? I have a number of homeschool children all around the world who are learning English and Reading. The mom who needs this now is in Warsaw, Poland. Thanks
SuzanI have the vinyl album containing all the songs.

In the old Letter People series, he was Quiet Q. He just hangs around not making a sound, until Miss U holds his hand. :) He is very shy and quiet. Miss U realizes that he is very shy, so she holds his hand, so he can make a sound.

A workshop presenter showed us how she teaches her students to put several pages together, folded in half (like cards, one inside the other), then she slipped an elastic band over the pages, to the fold. No staple needed.
If you wanted them stapled later, you could have an aide/volunteer parent or older, student monitor staple the booklets for you and then re-use the elastic bands.

I'm a reading coach in Citrus County. I'm asked often to give a child a diagnostic test. I've used the DAR, ERDA, Fox in a Box. None of them are really very good. Does anyone know of a diagnostic test that specifically identifies the child's reading problem? Thanks! Margaret
