I have used 4 blocks before with first graders. It will be my first time with kinders, using building blocks. The school also uses read well and units of study for writing, and it is only 1/2 day kinder. I'm wondering how to blend everything and get it all in, probably won't. :) Thanks for any thoughts or experiences.
I am so confused! I've been teaching Kindergarten for 6 years and this year I'll be teaching K and 1st together. We are a small private school, aprox. 70 students K-12,so my class is rather small.(5 Kindergartners and 3 first graders) It's not the number of students that concerns me. ( I realize this is a very small class in comparison to public school numbers.) I just don't know how to do Building Blocks AND Four Blocks in the same classroom. I should mention that this is my first year teaching either of these methods, so I'm a bit nervous too! Please help. I am in need of wisdom and advice. Thank you! Your thoughts will be a blessing! To really evaluate the situation, you need to look at the level of your students. There is a book titled "Sounds in Actions". It is a wonderful book that is recommended to go along with these programs. It offers a phonological awareness assessment for students. If you do the assessment, then you'll know where to start. If the five kindergarten students have many phonemic awareness skills, then I would recommend starting with about a month long review of building blocks activities. Then move into 4 blocks. my 5 year old writes his numbers backwards and gets frustrated when we make him rewrite them should we make him do this or will he write them on his own as he gets older?
writing letters and numbers backwards is very common at this age. Even into first and second grade. I think that kids don't see it as backwards sometimes. More importantly than writing them is the understanding of what a number means and number recognition.
