I was trained to use big books that were at the average of your class. I have read many of the titles suggested in BB aloud, but didn't consider them shared reading. So, they obviously aren't expected to be able to read many of these books by matching one to one(not that all children could do that even with level 1-3(reading recovery level) big books. I am having a hard time letting this concept go-plus we don't have the big books of many of the titles suggested just the little books and no money to buy them. I thought I could chart some of the parts that are repetitive. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
For those of you pursuing the National Board, you have a fantastic journey ahead of you, but also hundreds of hours of hard work, too. Six teachers at my school are elementary school mentors for "Florida teachers" working on National Board certification. We also help others with lesson planning, integrated activities, discipline, diagnosis of learning blocks, strategies for successful learners, and a host of other topics. Please allow us to help you. We will help with plenty of TLC.
Hi! My principal is wanting me to go for the National Board.. I'd love more information about what exactly is involved.. Thanks..Delaine

Does anyone have any great ideas for ways to preserve the books we make each week with Predictable Charts?
In previous years, I've laminated the individual pages and used the book binder in the Media Center. The books held up wonderfully for the entire year and the kids loved taking a couple as souveneirs at the end of the year. Our principal has said we cannot laminate any student work this year. No exceptions. I've used clear contact paper to protect the books we've done so far, but the smell really gets to me and they don't seem to be as sturdy.

I use the plastic page protectors and a three ring binder, the kind with the clear pockets on front. I make a computer generated cover, slip into the pocket and put the kid's pages in the protectors. I've had very little tearing over the year. At the end of the year, I take the pages out and bind them with a plastic comb for our student auction. The three ring binder then is re-used the next year for another student book.
The only draw back I've found is that student work is limited to the 8 1/2 X 11 page size.
Hi, This is my first year doing building blocks. I was wondering what do you do to teach handwriting? It doesn't seem to be emphasized. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
I model the correct way to make a letter, both physically and verbally as we are doing the "Names" activities found early in the month by month book. Each day we have a "star person" and we all write their name together. I go first, then they do it with me. I try to use the same verbal phrases over and over...ex..."tall straight line pull down, small hill (letter h). We practice writing words around the room, more names, sight words, color words etc. I always go first, then they go with me. Sometimes it is on paper with pencil, sometimes on our small dry erase boards, rainbow writing, and shaving cream.
We are having our open house this week and I was wondering if anyone had a nice little info. sheet for parents. The 4 Blocks book had a great one, but the Building Blocks book has a letter regarding phonemic awareness. While it is helpful, it does not explain the program and all its components. Thanks!

I use this one sometimes: "The bears see _______." You are checking for comprehension of the tale, as well as focusing on the words "the" and "see". You can have them to imagine other things Goldilocks may have "rearranged".
