But I took a couple days and drilled in new rules. "Everyone in school deserves to feel safe and happy." And "Do No Harm: 1) To yourself 2) To others and 3) To property." (We still recite the rules at circle time right after we sing our welcome song.)
I read a lot of books about respect and kindness. I did a lot of role play with the kids that week too. I would take a toy away or something and the child had to respond, "Miss SueZan, it made me sad when you took my toy." I then responded, "I'm sorry I made you sad when I took the toy away. I won't do it again." Try role playing with them, "________, it made me feel __________ when you __________." Then have the other person respond, "_________, I'm sorry I made you feel __________ when I ____________, I won't do it again."
They love to role play. But now comes the time to watch him like a hawk even more and every time he says something mean or does something inappropriate you have to pause what you're doing. Hold one persons hand and the bully's hand and have them face each other. They use the same sentences above. I then take their hands at the end and put them together in a high five and say, "Let's be friends!" Then I go back to what I was doing. It does stink to have to have a detour to the lesson plan and deal with the disruption, but it helped in my class and after about three weeks, I could see that the bullying had definitely lessened a lot.
But I have to mention that both boys were also coming from a good home situation with very supportive parents who knew about the situation and wanted to help. I wish you all the best and you try to figure out how to work well with this student. :)

The professionals in the school are sometimes bigger bullies than the children bullies. A child came up to me one day and told me that his teacher told them not to speak to me when the see me.

My administrator know about the bullying at my school because she is a part of it. Every week as I wall throughout the halls of my school there is a different teacher trying to bump into me in the hallway whereas other teachers see it happens but they refuses to say anything about it. I move aside so as not to get bumped as other teachers look on. I am sure that another teacher will try it next week. You may ask yourself why don't you report it to the principal....the principal is well aware of what is going on at this school because she is a part of it. My principal is waiting for me to do something drastic like swing on one of the teachers' so that she would have a reason to get rid of me. She placed a para in my class that report every word that I say with a mistruth correlation connection. I have reported to the principal that the para was not doing her job many time and for some reason the principal could care less. I adore my school because of the diversity of students...I adore my students parents and I refuse to transfer because of the bullies that are chain locking the school.
