Bullying and what teachers need to do

Hello everyone! I'm about to get my Probationary Certificate to teach Language Arts in Texas, and after going to a whole lot of classes, I noticed that there was NO content about how to deal with bullies.

I've read so much about "classroom management," but so little about helping the poor child(ren) who hate school because others are cruel to them.

I found this chatboard and will now look to see what's being said. Glad I found you!

c I know this response is many months later, but I hope you get to read it.

We just had a fantastic workshop on bullying in our school because it is a major issue where I work. The presenters name is Ray Amanat and he really has a fantastic grasp of what really takes place in the classroom and in a typical school when it comes to bullying. ...See More

By calling it "bullying" instead of by their criminal counterparts in the real world, we make it seem as if it is less serious than it is an...See MoreIt is unfortunate that we've separated out this set of behaviors that occur on campus from what in the real world off campus would (in those states that have such laws) be considered harassment and/or assault. By calling it "bullying" instead of by their criminal counterparts in the real world, we make it seem as if it is less serious than it is and, very often, treat it as a normal part of childhood (partly because it has been going on for longer than there have been government schools - whether as part of human nature or some sort of Social Darwinian means of children trying to enforce some concept of "normal" or whatever).

It is STUPID to think that we can do anything to end this abstract concept called "bullying" - it's as stupid as LBJ's "war on poverty," the nation's "war on drugs" or Bush's "war on terror." People are still poor, still using drugs and still experiencing terror and/or being terrorized, and it will continue!

No, it's time to stop dealing with abstract concepts and start dealing directly with the perpetrators. Instead of trying to fight "bullying," fight the bullies themselves. Start having them charged with harassment and/or assault and let the criminal justice system deal with them. That's how schools should deal with it. Forget corporal punishment (you said you were in Texas); forget those silly classes on diversity and tolerance that most kids don't take seriously anyway; forget having awareness campaigns about bullying. Off campus, most of the bullying behaviors would rise (or nearly rise) to the level of violating penal codes in some states (the evil empire known as The Empire State, for example, has laws against harassment and assault) and it's time to treat the same behaviors on campus the same way.

If I seem a bit irritated, it's because this past weekend a kid who just started high school in a wealthy suburb committed suicide as the bullying he endured throughout middle school started up again. I'm so sick of schools not dealing with what these kids endure as the criminal acts they really are!
