I was at a super scrimmage with my daughter's volleyball team this weekend. The team that should have won the entire tournament left because their coach discovered some of his girls were taking video of a girl on a weaker team, comparing her to an animal, and posting this video on YouTube. After apologizing, this coach planned on taking his team home to "work out their aggression" in his home gym for the 5 hours they would have been at the tournament. I wish we all had the courage to take such a drastic step with our students, athletes, sons, and daughters. This coach could have easily pretended he didn't know about it. We need to explicitly teach the dangers of making ugliness public. Messaging, posting videos, etc...it is essential that we add yet another piece to our already crowded curriculum.
